Quick question - can I use my International Driving Permit (IDP) to apply for a Thai driver’s license and TM30, or do I need to wait until after my first 90-day report?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The consensus from comments is that you do not need to wait for the 90-day report before applying for a Thai driver's license. You can use your International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside your home driver's license. However, to apply for the license, you will need to obtain a certificate of residence, which can be acquired through immigration, and this requires proper documentation including the TM30. Some users suggest that you can receive the residency certification simultaneously while filing the TM30.

Take a thai driving license, you could have problems in case of accident with international driving license. It costs less than 5 euros and it is super easy get it. You need only certificate of residence that you can have after you'll have filled the tm30 ( the one online isn't enough, you need to go to immigration to get the paper)

Make a private insurance, not only the government insurance, it costs

As long as you have your original drivers license and the IDP you can apply right away or at least close to 45 day mark and I didn’t have any issues in bang Chak

Just get your certification of residence from immigration, also you have to have proper Visa (what I've been told recently) for getting Thai license.

You do not need a 90 days reports, get a tm 30 and your passport, a printed copy of your passport, visa, and visa stamped on passport , 2 printed passport pictures and go to immigration for a residence certificate.

Not sure if tm30 counts as residence proof. You can get a certificate of residence from your own embassy or at immigration department with a tm30.

I got my Thai license 2 months after coming here so I didn't even have to do the 90 day report at that point. Also, I've never had an international driving permit and still got my thai license.

You need to get the 90 day report and get a certificate of residence at the same time.

Nope. You don’t. Bangkok used to have a restriction of having to have done a 90 day report before you could get a residence certificate but that policy stopped quite some time ago.

it’ll depend on the immigration office. I believe Bangkok immigration did fairly recently do away with the requirement for a 90 day report in order to get a certificate of residency but other offices may still require it.

I’ve not heard of any other office having this requirement. Doesn’t mean that there may not be one but I’ve never seen a post about one
