TLDR : Answer Summary
Visitors in Thailand can use their US driver's license for up to three months, provided they have an International Driving Permit (IDP). After three months, it is recommended to obtain a Thai driver's license, which is relatively affordable and straightforward to acquire. While some may have no issues using their US license beyond three months, particularly in the case of rentals, legal compliance suggests transitioning to a Thai license for longer stays.

Go to any AAA location with 2 passport size pictures and get an International Driver's Permit before you come. Then you are all set.
Aaron *******
If Tourist to Thailand, go to AAA location in USA, and get a International Driver's Permit. Been traveling in Thailand 10 years, been asked for it twice at the numerous road blocks.
John **********
You do not need an IDP. I never had one never had any problems.

@John *********
yes you do - we are not all Americans

then get it if you need it. 🤷‍♂️

IDP is acceptable firm for Thai Police.However; if long stay, or retirement, lots of advantages to Thai DL, and cost is a few hundred baht and a 30 min video. Very quick and friendly

I know about to get my 5 year license for motorcycle and car. I'm just saying IDP is not needed if the license is in English
Steve **********
@John *********
agree.. but after about 3 months, again depending on province or cop, why the hassle. I used a Florida dl until it expired. Then got a 5 yr, after which was 10 year
Andy **********
Been stopped many times and international license no problem

If you want to play safe, get an IDP. It's valid for a year.

If you plan to live in Thailand, just get a Thai license. It's cheap, quick, and easy.

For home country license, it really depends on policemen. Some are okay with it. But insurance company won't pay if you have an accident.

Here's some more info about how to drive here

@Saran **************
just because IDP is valid for a year does not mean you can use it for a year.
Chris ****
IDL or Thai. But depending on where you are can use your home license but I would suggest carrying your passport then if you go that route. Worst case you get ticket and pay fine. Unlikely you will be screwed about having your bike or car get towed (very rare and you have to be a real asshole) since it’s a rental.

@Tea **********
If you can't pay on the spot and/or for no helmet they chain up your bike.
John **********
@Ricky *****
they started taking drivers licenses if you could not pay on spot. You have to go to police station and collect it also pay fine

Short term, for tourists, depends on cop really, but after 3 mos need Thai DL, Just bring current DL to DMV with health cert from any clinic ( 50 to 100 baht )

You have to watch video, take an eye test, but very friendly and quick.

Advantage to DL are many once you have ( dont need to carry around PP, and can hotel reg, and can book domestic flights, use PO, etc. Need separate for auto and motorbike. Can't recall cost, but is minimal.
Steve **********
@Оливер ********
WTF ?

Just returned from Pattaya, used DL to book flight, register in hotel and at PO to send package.

Have done so for 20 yrs.

@Steve *********
hilarious stuff he wrote there
John **********
You can use your US license for 3 months starting on your arrival date as long as you have an IDP to accompany it. If you are inside Thailand longer than 3 months you need a Thai license.
Jo **********
Ադամ ********
Short term visitor yes, as long as it is accompanied by a valid IDP issued in USA.
Todd *********
@Ադամ *******
nobody ever asks for IDP.
Greg ********
You can use a foreign licence for 3 months accompanied with an international driver's permit. After such you should have a Thai licence
Jo **********
@Greg *******
There is a lot misinformation being posted but what you say Greg is in fact correct
John **********
@Greg *******
no need for an international permit. I was pulled over a few times at check points. They looked at my US drivers license and waved me through.
Kim *********
@John *********
it is for some - apparently not for Americans
Paul *******
@John *********
In theory, you should have an IDP too, according to Thai law. In practice, car rental agencies rarely, if ever, request one. Thai police might.
Jo **********
@Paul ******
No. No. For 3 months or less do not need
Paul *******
@Jo *********
I think you misunderstand. The law states that tourists don't need a Thai license and can drive on their national license + a translation or an international driving permit if staying less than 3 months.

Like I already mentioned, most of the time you can rent a vehicle without needing to show an international driving permit, unless you hold a license from an obscure country such as Cambodia or China. In the latter case, not being a signatory to any of the UN driving conventions, whether 1949 or 1968, for Chinese license holders an official translation should be good enough.
Jo **********
@Paul ******
yes what you say now makes sense
Bob **********
@Greg *******
the key word is should 😎😎😎
Andy ********
Not true, if you have International driving permit with motorcycle stamp you should be okay
Oleg ***********
@Andy *******
sure, same any other international license, but my comment was- try to explain this to traffic police. Especially in Pattaya. They will laogh at your documents..
Andy ********
@Oleg **********
i hear you now although ive never had a problem with cotrect papers
John ********
@Oleg **********
you need to man up and say no to them
Oleg ***********
@John *******
sure.. and stand there forever..
John ********
@Oleg **********
your international permit will only last for 3 months in Thailand
John ********
@Oleg **********
they will back down
Oleg ***********
Try to explain this to police! Need Thai license or pay fine..
Oleg ***********
My friend, I understood your point, but Pattaya is different. They already have text printed on paper in 3 languages, fine is 1000 baht (actually it’s 400, but there 1000) if you stay here long time, it’s ok, but new people all pay. Cannot explain anything to them.

I make drivers license for living in Thailand, have agency. I know a little bit what I’m talking about.

Sure you can sit there for 2 hours trying to explain, after they write you a ticket and you go Soi 9 police and sit there another hour and after you come back, your motorbike is towed to police parking lot. After you go pay for towing and parking… this is how it’s done over here and nobody care if you still have 3 months from entry stamp
Paul *******
@Oleg **********
No. That's nonsense. A tourist is permitted to drive on a foreign license. Thailand isn't Vietnam, which only recognizes their own licenses. However, a resident should obtain a Thai driver's license. If found to be living in Thailand and not in possession of a Thai driver's license, you could be fined. It's rare that an investigation would be made as most officers will be fine with a valid foreign license if you aren't in possession of a Thai license. I haven't really heard of police officers examining passports to verify residency status. For anyone who's holding a long term visa or extension, it's best to apply for a Thai driver's license as soon as possible.
Kim *********
@Paul ******
wrong - a tourist from eg Denmark must have an IDP to drive in Thailand - a Danish license is not valid
Prinze ******
@Oleg **********
please try to be more understanding. Thai people cannot really speak English and they have a different system her

Just be mindful that in Thailand, they have a separate license for motorbike and cars (2 pieces of card) so with your US d.license or international d.license. you should be able to show them that you're ok to drive both.

Thai police might be wondering if you only showed them one piece or card of license, and most probably that's for driving a car.
Dave **********
@Oleg **********
you just got scammed by a corrupt cop :( I actually used my IDP for 3 years :-) before I finally broke down and got my Thailand driver's license / motorcycle license I was stopped many times and ask for my license I showed my USA driver's license along with my IDP which was old and faded and torn. Never got fined
David *********
@Oleg **********
never had a problem showing my uk licence and IDP
