Visa advice

Hello! My boyfriend and I are currently in Bangkok . We came visa exempt, renewed for another 30 days and we now need to leave the country again. We want to stay until April (5 months approx).

Can we apply for the Multiple Entry tourist visa from Laos or vietnam and if so how long does that take? Or can we apply for a simple 60 day tourist visa and does anyone have any tips of what country is fastest and easiest to do this from? Any help is appreciated! We are from USA and Spain.
Answer summary
The user is seeking advice on visa options as they want to stay in Thailand for five more months after initially entering on a visa exemption and extending their stay. They inquire about the feasibility of applying for a Multiple Entry Tourist Visa (METV) or a simple 60-day tourist visa from either Laos or Vietnam, asking for the fastest and easiest options. Comments suggest Laos is quicker for METV applications, though Vietnam has been efficient too. Users mention that going to Malaysia might be less favorable. There are recommendations to consult the Thai migration website for the latest rules, especially considering recent changes in visa policies.

Don't do border run

In Lao take couple days to apply for a visa. And if I was you, apply for 6 months multi entry. If you go to Vientiane, you need an appointment at the embassy via their website. If you go to Savannakhet dont need. But you need to be in line at 7am and usually next day at 2pm you get your visa. (This embassy is the fastest) Lao visa on arrival (1000thb) embassy is 1 km from the bus terminal.. many hotel around the terminus.. so no need to pay over charged taxi. (Unless if you woke up late). A cross of street of the embassy, you get all the documents you need. Don't forget to have minimum 2 pictures, bank statements, proof of address in Thailand and proof of your flight back home in April. Cost of visa 1000 or 2000thb. Good luck.

P.S. WHILE YOU ARE THERE, EAT THEIR BREAD AND SANDWICHES... EXTREMELY GOOD.

Just don’t do it from Malaysia - you’ll be there forever.

Me and my partner flew to Vietnam and submitted our METV application last Wednesday October 28th at 6:04PM as soon as we got out of the airport. On Thursday, October 29th at around 3PM we heard from the embassy asking for additional documents, we submitted those ASAP. On Saturday at around 4PM we received an email saying it’s been approved. We pre fill our application before we left Thailand and only left the ones that we needed our boarding passes for so we could submit it immediately as soon as we were out the airport. I hope this helps!

Expect difficulties, Thai immigration does not want tourists that often extend their stamps/visas. People with a history of often in and out of Thailand are being questioned at airports extensively.

You got NO chance of staying till April with zero visa 🤣

You have to apply from home country but technically you could do so from Vietnam just tell em you're back home get flight tickets from your home country to Thailand (cancel later)

So you have stayed 30 days, got a 30 day extension and now want to stay another 5 months? What do you do for a living and what are the reasons to stay what in total would be 7 months?

John Hampton how is this relevant? I was here 2years with exempts, got lectured by IO, then took ED for 9months and now been on DTV for 2years+. Doing what? Enjoying my life, however its different for us under 50 since we cannot get retirement visa so we have to play the games they set for us, within the rules of course

My advice would be go to Vietnam for 60 days then return to Thailand in the new year . Maybe you could risk a visa run you may be OK for the 1st one but doubtful you'll be able to do it for 5 months

Admittedly a few years ago, but I found the Thai Embassy in KL very efficient, you apply for the visa one day, and pick it up the next day ! Maybe not so good now ?

Vietnam is probably your best bet. Remember that if you are American you also need to apply for an evisa to enter Vietnam. Even though the turnaround can be fast in Ho Chi Minh it's probably best to budget two weeks just in case anything goes wrong with your application the first time through. Once you're back, though, you will still have to leave every 60 days. You also need to be aware that Thai customs can ask for proof of funds even though it's unusual, for individual tourists it seems 20,000 baht is enough; cash is safer but not absolutely required.

It took about 10 business days for my SETV from Vietnam. That’s with them requesting more information.

If your plan is to stay until April, I would suggest the METV. You will still have the leave the country every 60 days though.

I don’t think you’re going to stay here that long on SETVs. The good old days of “living” here on short term and visa exemptions are done.

Good luck!

CopperFlamingo7900 when you applied did you put vietnam in current location even though your home address is in another country?
CopperFla*********
CopperFla*********
Charlie Gibbons there are two sections. One with home address and one with current address. Used my Canadian as my home and Vietnam as my current.
SwiftF*******
SwiftF*******
CopperFlamingo7900 Why 60 days? Can extend for 30 days for a total of 90 days per entry.
CopperFla*********
CopperFla*********
SwiftFrog3213 they aren’t going to let you extend each entry to 90 days. Like I said, the days of living here on short term visas are over.

You might wana look at updated rules from the official Thai government site. Im US citizen. The extended visas have stopped they allow 30 days. They offer DTV but requires travels to your home country for background checks and submitted through US Thai embassy.

Exactly. You did the same thing. On and on, the only difference was, he was giving an option or alternative idea for what they want and you were just being a total asshole.

If you feel the need to belittle others, why don’t you leave this group and go pick on your sister or the women at the women’s shelter.

Nobody likes your type. You know. I know it and that’s why you are such a miserable peckerhead.

Xtina Giles Nothing could interest me less. The fact is, the person asking the question asked a specific question, and your comment had absolutely nothing to do with it.

But it could also be due to the typical American need to communicate, to tell everyone everything (sometimes) unsolicited, especially that one is American.

Laos and Vietnam are the only places reported to have issued METVs to non residents. Laos is quicker but you also have to visit the consulate to pay with a print out of the QR code you get after submitting your application. Someone reported they go theirs in 3 days in Vietnam just yesterday
