Can DTV visa holders open a Thai bank account and how do they manage without one?

Hello everyone. I am a DTV holder like many of you.

I am a YouTuber, and I applied for the DTV visa by myself. The total cost was approximately USD 400. As we all know, DTV holders are generally not allowed to open a Thai bank account. However, I did not stop trying.

I sent emails to several Thai banks explaining that DTV holders need access to banking services while staying in Thailand. Most banks replied with polite rejections. However, Bangkok Bank replied and invited me to visit a branch to discuss the matter with the branch manager. The email also mentioned that opening a bank account would depend on the branch manager’s consideration in my case.

I visited the nearest Bangkok Bank branch with all required documents and mentioned the email invitation. Unfortunately, the branch manager informed me that DTV holders are currently not allowed to open bank accounts. It seemed there was no coordination between the email response and the branch itself. I found this experience somewhat confusing but wanted to share it honestly.

At the moment, I am using TrueMoney, and it is very useful. I upgraded my account to the Advanced level using my driving license. For daily use, it works well.

However, I would like to share one important point for fellow DTV holders:

TrueMoney applies fees after a certain number of transactions. After 30 received transactions and 30 transfer transactions, fees may apply. Merchant payments (such as 7-Eleven, Makro, and other registered merchants) are not included in this count. However, individual payments, such as paying taxi drivers, street food vendors, or personal transfers, are included.

I hope this information is helpful to others in a similar situation.

Thank you, and have a good day.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The post discusses the difficulties faced by DTV visa holders in opening a Thai bank account, detailing the author's experience with Bangkok Bank where despite initial communication permitting a visit, the branch manager ultimately denied the possibility based on current regulations. The author shares their use of TrueMoney as an alternative for banking needs, including transaction limits and potential fees for personal transfers. The discussion also includes various comments from community members questioning the logic behind attempting to open a bank account as a DTV holder, discussing tax implications, and seeking clarification on transaction limits within TrueMoney.

But how can you use truemoney fully? Only the base account is possible without having a thai relevant verification (ID Card, pink card e.t.c)

Can someone explain this to me?

DTV holders cannot open a bank account, but if they stay in the country for more than 180 days a year, they are liable for tax. Without a bank account, you can't pay taxes at all because the tax office has no information and no tax number, right?

@Urs *******
that is confused

Some said continuous 180 days

Some said 180 days in a year

if we have to pay taxes, we should get the chance to buy installment.

Allot of words with zero information. Ending with a shameless youtube plug 🥴 Ugh 😩

How did you even manage to write down so many words with zero meanful cohesion?

Amazing info. I use it frequently and was not aware.

So what counts toward limit, do you know for sure? Like paying to street vendor after scanning counts but payment in Big C not because it is a business account...?

SuccessfullinMalaysia yes you are right

it counts individual accounts

business accounts like 7-eleven, makro, big-c are fine

@Haji ********
This is why I have not hit the limit yet. :) It restarts every 1st of the month?

Is it 30 free transactions per month and then it resets on the 1st of every month?

Why even try to open a Thai bank account? You already knew it wasn’t allowed. And even if 1 branche approved it, that would only last until a new manager comes in and freezes your account

@Chris **********
so, you are one of the people who think DTV people don't need bank account.

I have nothing to say for it.

but, why did they reply the email that said I was invited an interview with the branch manager even they already know the rules?
Chris ***********
@Haji ********
not sure why they did that, but nowadays it's common knowledge that you're not allowed to open a bank account while on a tourist visa, which the DTV still is.

So why even bother trying it instead of just enjoy the tike you're allowed to stay there.

Some people still try to do multiple border runs, while they know now that its risky. But they shouldn't complain if they are denied entry.

Go to the head office in silom. The head office are likely to know more.

Best place to open any bank accounts if you meet the requirements

Is it a certain amount of transactions per time period before fees or just in general.

I’ve done quite a few

@Amir **********
just after 30 receive

we have to pay 6 baht for one (whatever the amount is)

just after 30 transfer

we have to pay 25 baht for one (whatever the amount is)

so bad :(
Akram ************
@Amir **********
30 transaction/ month for personal bank accounts, then it will be 25 baht/ transaction.

You can scan and pay business bank accounts without any limits or fees.

Other apps such as Moreta pay don't support personal bank accounts at all.

So it's better to have something like this than nothing. but the fee is insane.

If you don't keep an eye on it, you will end up paying a 25 baht fee for paying for a 35 baht of banana or an orange juice on a local market.

So better to use cash in such situation even though I really hate coins
