TLDR : Answer Summary
Recent discussions reveal that Thai immigration authorities are becoming more vigilant regarding onward tickets, which some travelers obtain through online services. Commenters noted that while these tickets can be legitimate, many fake ones are being used to game the system. Alternatives like purchasing affordable real tickets or using bus and train tickets have been suggested. Additionally, it was emphasized that not all travelers, especially those on DTV visas, are required to show onward tickets.
"I was honestly shocked — not sure if that’s even legal." Cry cry cry.. Of course it's legal you are trying to cheat immigration... Stop being a cheap Charlie and book a cancellable flight for a fee or get a land border ticket like a bus.

Yikes people. The exit ticket doesn’t have to be a flight. I’ve used bus tickets and train tickets before. No where does it say it must be a flight. It must however, be a ticket to exit the country.

I'm not surprised by this! I had seen one ticket created by this website. One look and even me I could see it wasn't really a flight ticket, more like an itinerary as there's a booking reference but no ticket number 🤷🏾

Wrong group. With DTV you dont need an onward ticket

Onward tickets are still real tickets though. They are simply cancelled by the company after you enter the country. The person on Reddit also showed the onward ticket email instead of opening the PDF within the email and showing that. So this "software engineer" is just an idiot.
he wouldn’t have been asked that if he hadn’t shown an email from ‘onward ticket dot com’ or whatever company he bought it from instead of the actual ticket.

AuthenticPassionfruit644 that's pretty much up to the discretion of the immigration officer, no matter what kind of visa you have. Holding a visa is not a guarantee of entry.
For the price of these onward ticket websites, you could just buy a real flight with Air Asia to many destinations.
Thai immigration aren't stupid, they know that the "onward ticket" isn't a real ticket. But you can buy an actual ticket from BKK - Phnom Penh for 1500 baht and then just never use it.
