While I’m waiting for my DTV to be accepted in Australia, will going to Bali for 5 days mess up my application?I know you’re not supposed to, but is there a way they can find out?
Answer summary
Traveling to Bali while your DTV application is under review in Australia can negatively impact your visa outcome. It is generally required to remain in the country where you applied until your visa is approved. Leaving could lead to refusal if authorities check passport stamps or other travel data, as it violates the application rules. Some individuals have received differing advice based on their embassies, suggesting contacting your embassy for definitive information. While some have traveled without issues, the risks include cancellation of the application or needing to reapply.

Everyone out here making stuff up. There has been no concrete evidence of whether you can or cannot be overseas after the application is lodged, as people from different countries have confirmed that their embassies have different answers to this question. Your only way is to email Sydney and get a firm response on 'their' policy so it's in writing.
For DTV you must stay in the country where you applied until visa is issued, so leaving Australia for Bali while file is open can cause refusal. Embassy checks that you are present in Australia for the whole process and your entry stamps must match. Even a short trip breaks that rule.
They can find out from passport stamps, boarding data and if they ask for new selfie with location or fresh bank proof. If they see travel, they can cancel or ask you to reapply from new country. Safer to wait in Australia and travel after you get e visa.
You could consider reading a book or two before your trip. I’d recommend Unlock Thailand by Isla Rey on Amazon, it includes all the info and insights you need. You should check it out. A very good companion 👌.
Yes, you need to physically be in the jurisdiction of the embassy where you applied during the whole application process. If you know you shouldn’t, why are you doing it? Why trying to scam the system. It’s very easy to find out and your application will be cancelled. And to be hones I really hope that will be the case
I just waited in Bali myself after applying through the Canberra embassy. Took a few weeks. Arrived in BKK on the new DTV yesterday. No issues at immigration. Through in 2 mins
They may require proof of your location. It’s best to stay where you are and plan your holidays for later during your five-year stay period or as an exit (180 days).
