Hi. Apologies if this has been discussed, I can’t find the answer by searching…

My son is here on a non-o dependents visa (my husband is British and working here, my son is also British and in school here).

We have recently moved here and going to immigration for the first time on Thursday to process my husbands work permit and our dependant visas.

My son’s passport will need to be renewed in March. Will he then need to process a new visa? Or can it be transferred?

My main question is whether he should get a single or multi entry re entry. We have no plans to leave Thailand before March, and if we do it will definitely not be more than once.

Thank you!

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user inquired about the visa process for their son, who is on a Non-O dependent visa while living in Thailand. With their son's passport due for renewal in March, they asked whether a new visa would need to be processed or if the existing visa could be transferred. A comment clarified that upon renewing the passport, the current visa can be transferred to the new passport through a process called transfer stamps. They also mentioned that the son can apply for a re-entry permit if travel is anticipated, as long as he returns before the visa's expiration.

So, you enter Thailand on initial Non-O dependent visas and were stamped for 90 days. Is it right?

You and your son are applying for 1-year extensions. You will get an extension until the same date as your husband's extension when your extension is approved.

In case your son's passport validity is earlier than "permitted until" date of your husband's extension.

Your son will get an extension until his passport validity (March 2024). When he gets a new passport he needs to apply for transfer stamps from his old one to his new passport (<- just moving stamps, the date will not be changed or added). Then your son will apply for a new extension of stay, and get the stamp matching your husband's extension.

Your son can apply for a re-entry permit and travel no problem, as long as he will be back within the date of his stamp in March 2024.

You can get reentry permits 24h at dmk or bkk immigrations before you leave.

So can delay getting them. I would say apply for new passport as soon as possible. Get reentry when you need it.

, Actually, for OP's particular case, when you already are seeing to transfer stamps soon, I recommend applying for a re-entry permit at the immigration office where you apply for an extension.

You may need to apply for transferring stamps separately for an extension and re-entry permit if issuance offices are different. I.e, need to transfer the extension stamp at the local office and re-entry permit one at the airport office.

But where to apply for a re-entry permit is a bit out of the topic of OP.

thank you. Would a multi entry re- entry permit also transfer to the new passport? Or would the current one become invalid and would need to buy a new one?

He (or anyone) needs to apply for a new re-entry permit once he applies for a new extension.

His actual passport expired in October 24, but would need to apply in Feb/March to ensure the 6 months validity and the processing time…

So his extension will potentially be til Oct 24, right? So even if we get a new passport his multi entry permit would remain valid until Oct 24 once we transfer the stamp?

, his extension is until the earlier date of your husband's extension or his passport validity. So yes it will be until Oct 2024, to your question IF your husband's stamp is longer than your son's passport validity. And the re-entry permit matches his extension, so yes if it's the case.

, multiple re-entry permit can be transferred to a new passport. But remember, a re-entry permit will have the same validity with his extension.
