Will I face problems entering Thailand on a Visa on Arrival after my work permit and visa extension were cancelled while I was away?

I have worked in Thailand for the last 5 years as a teacher and I have finished my school on November 18, and the school applied for cancellation of work permit on November 22. It takes around 3 days to cancel the Work Permit and get the cancellation receipt. However, I had emergency and I took a flight back from Thailand on November 24. By now, my work permit has been cancelled and of course the extension of visa (extension is until 20th of May, 2020) that I had has automatically been cancelled (I could not wait for cancelling it by myself as I was not present there physically because I had to come back to India for emergency reasons). Now, I am planning to fly to Thailand to get my luggage back and arrive with a Visa-on-arrival (I am an Indian passport holder and can enter with VOA if I am staying not more than 15 days).

My question is, as I have not cancelled my visa extension by myself because I was not present there at that time, will I have a problem now to enter the country or get a VOA? What other discrepancies I can face? Do I have to do anything prior arriving to Thailand?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The poster is concerned about potential issues entering Thailand on a Visa on Arrival (VOA) after their work permit and visa extension were officially cancelled while they were abroad. The comments suggest that while the visa extension is technically still valid until cancelled, not being present to cancel it is problematic for future work in Thailand. However, entering on a VOA should not pose problems if the intention is not to work, as long as they have the appropriate documentation. Some advisors recommend using the e-VOA to clarify entry intentions.

@Shreya *****
I stated HOW you cancel an extension officially.

That's about all I can tell you.

Whether you come in on the old extension or get a new VOA, is up to you.

I'm not gonna tell you what to do entering this time.

You're on your own and have as much advice as I can provide.

Good Luck

I wanted to know what I can do if my WP has been cancelled when I was away from the country? It's manually not possible for me to cancel the visa extension as I wasnt there. Or do you think I can use my old visa (which seems to be valid as I have not cancelled it yet) and just enter Thailand, take my luggage, and be back in a week? Will it be wrong? Don't they get notified if my WP has been cancelled or not?

How about you just apply for the E visa on arrival FIRST and have the paper so there's no problem about what way you're getting in?

I had no idea there is a e-VOA. I am surely going to check this out.

thanks for your valuable input. I was away from the country when my Work Permit got cancelled. And now when I am trying to enter the country, what step should I be taking then? I am not coming there to get another job, I am coming there to get my luggage back.

Yes I understand the process of cancelling the extension but I could have done it only if I was present in Thailand physically, as I was not present in Thailand physically when my Work Permit got cancelled, I could not even cancel the extension.

But to my knowledge, when the school cancels the work permit, doesn't the extension become invalid on the same day?

The extension of visa is valid until 20th of May, 2020

alright, but my passport will have the extension visa on it that looks to be valid. Wont it be a problem if I am applying for VOA? Like if the officer asks why applying for VOA when you have a valid visa, then?

if you're not going to work here, don't worry, just come in on the 15 day VOA (have proof of funds, proof of onward travel and proof of where you're staying) and you shouldn't have any issues

You may face issues re-entering Thailand on a VOA with a history of already being in Thailand. Will depend on the officer.

Well - when I say 'happened to me' I mean to someone I knew from Mexico. Denied entry after a METV, with 5 days until her flight home. You may remember it - we spoke about it. May be an isolated case.

and what country are you from

As a rule I haven't seen people from the 18 countries that get 15 day visa on arrivals get too much grief comin' in based on their previous entry history, but I guess it could happen..

It's not gonna cause you a problem ENTERING thailand (whether you come back on a valid visa or on a visa on arrival) it's gonna cause you a problem if you ever are going to work here again.
Tod *********
IF you ever intend to work inside the country again you need to go and cancel it officially at the immigration office. You will probably be fined 500 baht a day from the date your work permit was canceled until the date you cancel your extension,

the extension is NOT automatically cancelled when you stamp out and once you get back into thailand you need to GO and get it officially cancelled.
