What are the rules for visa if I'm visiting Thailand for 77 days with plans to travel to neighboring countries?

Hey everyone just seeking some advice please. I fly to bangkok on 17th Nov and my flight back to Scotland is 31st jan.

I am wanting to leave the country and visit Cambodia, bali or Vietnam anyway but confused with the rules. I know I can get a 60 day tourist visa but I won’t be in a position to pay for my first hotel till a couple of weeks before I leave (due £ in), I also won’t have my other flight to the neighbouring country booked as I’m going with the flow and wanted to decide where to visit once I arrived in Thailand.

Will I be okay to either;

1. Travel without any visa then halfway through for 17 days and return and get the other 30 days visa free or

2. Apply for the 60 day tourist visa and then extend without paying for any hotels in advance of my application?

I’m away for 77 days.

Hope this makes sense and any advice is greatly appreciated, thanks 😊

TLDR : Answer Summary
A traveler plans to visit Thailand from November 17 to January 31, totaling 77 days, with intended trips to nearby countries like Cambodia or Bali. They consider two options regarding their visa: travel visa-free for 30 days and then exit/re-enter for another 30 days, or apply for a 60-day tourist visa and extend it. There are concerns about needing a flight out of Thailand booked in advance and the ability to secure accommodation without prepayment. The community suggests booking a neighboring country flight for safety, utilizing free cancellation accommodations, and highlights that personal experiences vary regarding being asked for exit flights.

I went for 90 days (during 45 day free stamp on entry) no flight booked of thailand,i stayed 44 days then flew to bali for 10 days then back to thailand for the rest of my 90 days visit....no questions asked at all no problems

45 day visa exempt ended april> NOW only 30days

I'm assuming that when you say "my flight back to Scotland is 31st Jan", that that flight is from Bangkok and you plan to visit a nearby country somewhere during your 77 days and return to Thailand and return to Scotland from there?🤔

If that's the case, follow the suggestion of

s about entering Thailand on Visa Exempt.

As has been mentioned or implied, not having a flight out of Thailand booked before flying out to Thailand could cause a problem, so booking a cheap flight to a neighbouring country is advisable from everything I've read in this and other Thailand related groups.

As for Accommodation, use Booking dot com or Agoda dot come to book at least your first few days, booking some place as soon as possible, opting for those with free cancellation and no up front payments (most allow free cancellation, no penalties). When you get to the time when you can pay for accommodation, if you want to cancel the accommodation you've booked, just do so or keep it as is. Personally, I use Booking dot com as it's easier to search. There's plenty of filters to give you choices of features, prices etc. at hotels, resorts etc.

Go to Cambodia or Laos. Both next to Thailand and inexpensive to get in and out

are you asking if there's any accommodation I'd recommend and if so, do you mean in Bangkok? I can't really recommend any there, as my only visit to Thailand, in October last year, I went straight to my planned destination (Nakhon Sawan Province) upon arrival. Before flying back home, I only stayed 1 night in Bangkok (hmm...sounds like the name of a movie) the night before departing & can't remember the name of the hotel (can't find it in booking history either 🤔)

I'm planning to return in April next year & have booked at 5 locations. Prices are high at that time, as it is Songkran, the Thai New Year and it's a very busy time. I have booked the "True Siam Phayathai Hotel" for my first 3 nights. It's close to Central Bangkok. For my last night in Thailand, I've booked one night at "Pimthong Place", more like a cosy bed and breakfast or small apartment type of place, because it is very close to the main airport (BKK). I look for lower to medium price accommodation mostly, but also based on good customer reviews, what they look like and features I prefer.

I may be tempting here, but,,, I have never been asked on entering Thailand from the uk when I’m leaving or if I have flight booked out🙏🤘

neither have I

tempting 'fate' you mean? Sometimes people are lucky, sometimes not. I'm just going on personal experiences or third hand experiences mentioned in the groups I'm a member of.

To be safe book your flight out of Thailand to Vietnam or Cambodia before your 60 day visa runs out. Maybe you will find a changeable flight. The low cost airlines, probably not, but their fares are very reasonable. Like 50 USD one way. Many will say they are never asked about this flight out of Thailand. I've been asked to provide proof of a flight out a couple of times, usually by airline personnel.
Brown ********
I'd do as Charlie mentioned. If it's a 77 day trip and you are visiting other countries, no need to screw around with a visa. But definitely take warning about the airline asking for an exit flight in 30 days. That is very possible

@Brown *******
yes. Vietjet wouldn't let me board at Bangkok without an onward ticket out of Vietnam ...very annoying and frustrating ...I've been to Vietnam over thirty times in the last 10 years and this was the first time it happened . Maybe a requirement after the new visa changes in August. Ive been told it's not an immigration requirement but I'm not sure

the world is sadly becoming more tyrant all because of a small % of bad people's. It's a shame

agree ...always the same a few spoil it for the many

Fly out get your first 30 days on entry then fly out of Thailand do your other bits then fly back into Thailand you get another 30 days 🙏🙏

Plus you have the option of extending either or both of the 30 day visa exempt entries. Cost 1900 baht.

You would solve all of your potential problems by just deciding when you'll go to another country and booking the flight. It'll also be cheaper to do now since the time you'll be here is right in the middle of high season.

If you fly without a visa it's possible your airline will not let you board your flight until you show them a ticket leaving Thailand within 30 days of your arrival.

If you apply for a tourist visa they'll want to see a flight out of Thailand within 60 days.

The hotel isn't an issue as you can book hotels without paying anything and just cancel if your plans change after you receive the visa.

if we come in on a 60 tourist visa but we have a round trip ticket for 90 days, is it okay to book a ticket out of Thailand only one way and not use it or book somewhere for a few days and return to Thailand again?
Brandon ************
@Debbie *********
either is fine. Airlines usually don't ask if you have a visa but the embassy will probably ask to see a flight out within 60 days as part of your visa application.

You can also Google "onward travel ticket" and find some agencies that "rent" plane tickets
Greg ***********
@Brandon ***********
when applying for a tourist visa, do embassies really accept an "onwardticket" reservation as proof of a flight out of Thailand? Don't they become invalid after 48 hours? I would rather recommend a cheap Air Asia one-way ticket (a genuine ticket!) from Hat Yai to Kuala Lumpur for 32.- U.S. Dollar
Brandon ************
@Greg **********
the ticket is valid for as long as the options you pay for. Do you really think the embassy staff are going online to check every ticket? Worst case scenario they send you an email asking for a new ticket.
Debbie ***********
@Brandon ***********
thank you. One more question... If we do fly somewhere for a couple of days when our 60 days is up would that eliminate having to apply for the 30 day extension?
Brandon ************
@Debbie *********
depends on how long your trip is. When you return you'll receive a stamp for 30 days. If you're returning home before then, you won't need an extension.
