Why can't I open a bank account in Thailand with a 90-day Non-O visa?

Well this is interesting , just gone into my kbank in the shopping centre to get a global inward form . In conversation they told me that new accounts cannot be opened now with a 90 day non o evisa . I opened mine over a month ago with this type . I thought really , lady in bank said government has changed what type .

So anyway I went into SCB and asked to open an account to be told the same information.

For info only , don’t know if this will be the same everywhere

TLDR : Answer Summary
Many expats are currently facing difficulties opening bank accounts in Thailand with a 90-day Non-O visa. The rules appear to vary between banks and branches, as the original poster experienced limitations at KBank and SCB. While some expats report successful account openings, others are receiving contrary information that suggests a preference for longer-term visas. This inconsistency has caused frustration and confusion among the expat community, particularly concerning the implications for visa extensions.

My wife opened an account at Kasikorn in Terminal 21 Pattaya last week no problem on Non 0

In my experience, each branch of each bank is different , most not knowing what is needed. From a yellow book marriage certificate etc. to Thai driving licence tm30 passport with non O visa.

Told y'all Anutin is a ****

Why would anyone break their backs to stay in a place that treats you like crap? Here boy, up, over, under, beg, there's a good boy 😅

Banks dont know the rules the e visa non o retire is allowed , it took me 11 banks to find one that will open bank account for me future park kasikorn as my tm30 is pathum thani area . Its nigjtmare trying to explain. Non o immigrant retire is allowed , if they dont allow then no retired people will be here and they need us . All i can say is keep trying until you find one , the delay in finding a bank has stuffed it up for me , as i cant now get one year extension within my 90 days so i go back to uk and start the process again . However thats cos i need to get back to uk. Good luck

18 months ago i went into the main branch of SCB here in Hua Hin (my first choice in banks) with my new non-o. Was told only on 12 months stamp.

@Tony *********
did you tell them that you can't get the one year extension without having a bank account with the required amount of funds in it two months before applying?
Tony **********
@Colin ********
of course. My opinion is that most banks don't want the hassle of dealing with foreign account holders. Way more paperwork for many, language barriers, etc. Bangkok Bank must have lost a huge number of customers over the past year and don't seem to care one bit.

@Tony *********
crazy isn't it... on one hand it seems that Thais love paperwork and on the other, not

I recon the system is geared towards people having to use agency

Generating more revenue for Thailand

I would like to see the actual document as banks are independent?

@Martyn ******
What document? They only thing you might find is a policy for that specific branch set by the manager. Nothing has changed from the government.

The trouble with bank staff in Thailand is that they do not understand the visas, and why should they. Her boss has probably misunderstood instructions from head office. At one branch I was told I couldn't open a bank account with a non O because it wasn't a visa. If I get an extension then I can open a bank account as that is a real visa. When I informed her that you cannot get an extension without a bank account she just shrugged her shoulders. I have a BBL account and when I asked to open a second account they told me I need a yellow book, work permit or letter from my embassy. I asked what type of letter from the embassy and she didn't know. The whole thing is a farce

then they hassle you if you cross a border fed up with trying to get visas !!

I opened my K bank account with a non o yesterday. Took all of 20 minutes.

yes that’s how my account was when I first opened it up . It was just a shock when the same lady told me the news

Totally defeats the object of embassies issuing a 90 visa to allow you time to set up bank account. They need to work together although they wont

@Michael *******
that's true, but I think that

is on the money

Could they provide the law that states this?
Tim ********
@Det ******
of course they can't. Nothing to do with government, banks are independent and run as a business, they publish their own rules on their websites.

Thus the OP was lied to.

Opened one 5 days ago at Kasikorn HuaHin... Needed Non-O visa, cellphone on pasport and resident certificate... no problem at all

From a friends experience, It would seem, they can't confirm on your paperwork the type of non-o. Medical, retirement, education visa etc. Immigration can give you a letter confirming the type.
Peter *******
My take is that the Govt. are making difficulties to induce people to get OA retirement visa from Embassy in home country.

Look I opened my account in the same branch with the same person over a month ago . That same person told me today if I try to open a new account with the same 90 non o visa stamp , now I would not be able to . It is not the branch it was a document sent by the government .
Brandon ************
@สก็อต ********
That person lied to you. The government hasn't changed anything. The government hasn't even been functioning for the last month. That bank branch just changed their policy and don't want to deal with foreigner paperwork anymore. The one down the street has different rules.
Graham ******
@Peter ******
It is not government/Immigration policy as there have been instances of some Immigration officials confirming this, It is totally down to bank "policy" in individual branches and could be down to staff members in certain branches who do not want the hassle of opening an account for a foreigner. Go online to the bank's customer support and get the policy from them and take this to the bank.
Peter *******
@Graham *****
I am well aware of official policy. I don't need to go online and check anything as after 9 years of Non O extensions I am already sorted. I just seems to me from various posts things are getting more difficult to obtain a new Non O 90 day visa in country.
Graham ******
@Peter ******
If you're aware of official policy why are you blaming the government, you know it is the banks and one in particular? The Non-O is 90 days BTW ;)

By the sounds they want the 1 year stamp . Which blows my mind . As how can people season the Thai bank account before they go to immigration to extend
Jordan *****
@สก็อต ********
so you opened an account a month ago and now they told you that the account is blocked? Or what happened?

@Jordan ****
no I went in for something else , but the lady said to me , it was a good job I opened my account before as a new document from the government has come out stating a new account on a non o 90 day evisa stamp is no longer accepted

@สก็อต ********
I get it now. Thanks

There are increasing reports of this. Many people still manage to open a bank account with a 90 day Non O visa and a residence certificate after trying several banks or branches. This puts people who are about to apply for an extension in a difficult position, and a practical way out can sometimes simply be to use an agent to help with opening the account. Agents are still able to arrange this for applicants holding a Non O visa.
