Now in Phuket, taking fingerprints to conduct a criminal record check before issuing marriage certificate.

This because they think foreigners are just marrying for the Visa and possibility to stay longer.

They can only check for criminal records within Thailand, it is not possible to check for records in other countries.

But if you have company or children or been long time in Thailand the papers can be done in one day, if you are here short time as tourist it will take longer.

TLDR : Answer Summary
In Phuket, a new requirement has been implemented for foreigners wishing to marry, where they must submit fingerprints for a criminal record check before receiving a marriage certificate. This measure has been introduced amid concerns that some foreigners may attempt to marry Thai nationals primarily to obtain a visa or extend their stay in Thailand. The criminal record check is limited to records within Thailand, and while those with longer residency or family ties may process their paperwork more quickly, tourists may face longer processing times.

To be honest it’s this which is most interesting because they have stated its non immigrant visa O .

Now I’m going through this on an SETV so you can understand it but I thought a non immigrant visa O was a one year visa for which you have shown funds .

“Many groups of foreigners in Thailand, legally in the country on a Non-immigrant Visa-O from some 13 countries have been registering for marriage certificates and family registration in order to wrongfully obtain a marriage visa, be involved in illegal drugs, or conduct other criminal activities,” said the 2017 notice.

who ever wrote that has a scant understanding of the differences between a Non-O visa gotten outside the country at a thai consulate or one gotten inside the country at an immigration office..

AND they have no understanding of the yearly extension process inside the country at the immigration offices.

The article is littered with incorrect terms and wrong information.

If they are serious, I doubt it will be confined to Phuket.

I think they are finally admitting they have a serious issue of not knowing who's here and granting entrance to those that shouldn't be here. Perhaps recent events in Pattaya and mass arrests in Bangkok have finally tipped the balance. Thailand simply don't like all this bad news all over the world media outlets.

@Ron ******
can you explain to me how they would check the criminal database in one's home country?

, what does signing up for the thai elite visa have to do with the price of tea in china?

It's got nothing to do with this topic at all.

I will also caution you to stop denigrating particular demographics on the group. Thank you for your cooperation.

When you sign up for the TE you agree to them checking the criminal database in your home country. That's why the approval takes around 10 days. It's easy for them to check on anybody, anywhere if they choose to do it.

They don't work with pens and ledgers anymore. Surprising they use computer's and Databases 😊

Read my post above regarding the TE visa on just what they can and do regarding a foreign database.

Read it again, It says they can only do criminal checks within Thailand !!, So how does this prevent foreign criminals getting a visa if they have only committed crimes overseas ???

I married my wife over there last year and was not asked for this. Had they done so I would have gladly handed them my Australian Federal Security Clearances. If you have nothing to hide then I don't see any issues.

Seeing as you can get married in any Amphur in the country (not just the one you live in) I see an exponential drop in the number of foreigners getting married in Phuket.

This bit is interesting

However if they are a tourist for example, hasn’t been here very long, there may be further checking into the history of the person.

Strange they say they can't check the foreign database when TE do when you apply for the visa. What further checks could they do on Tourists if that isn't the case?

Didn't they announce a short time ago in mid 2017 that they were working with the UK and US on database sharing and this fingerprint and bio metric system? They stated the UK and US were installing it.

I guess they think short time tourist has bigger chance to have a criminal record than the one who is running around here for years.

AFAIK, it's only Phuket that's rolled out this scheme right now.

It'd have swept the inter-web if it was a country wide thing.
