Update: I went to the ministry

Of labor in Bangkok and idk how “official” this is but the staff there said there is a new law that the employer must cancel the work permit or else they will be fined. They said that even if I have the physical copy, I still cannot

Cancel it myself. (Which sucks)

Side note: my permit was still active.

TLDR : Answer Summary
An update from the Ministry of Labor in Bangkok indicates a new requirement: employers must now cancel work permits or face fines. Individuals cannot cancel their permits even if they possess a physical copy. This change emphasizes the employer's responsibility in the cancellation process. Insights from other regions like Phuket suggest a similar enforcement of these rules, highlighting the importance of clear communication between employees and employers regarding work permit status.

Thanks for the update and before we get updates of every Ministry of Labor all over Thailand and their enforcement on how to cancel a Work Permit I close the commenting. If you stop working contact the Ministry of Labor, after all the booklet is in your name and you're also responsible to get it cancelled.

It’s official.

15 years ago, I had to personally turn it in to the Labor Department for cancellation. It was hole-punched and given back to me. Still have it.

Fast-forward 15 years: Last September, I tried to do the same thing. The department official called my employer on the spot and chewed them out for not taking it at the end of my employment. I had to take it back to them and HOPE they followed through.

If it is still active, how about your visa now? And what institution or company do you work for? I also heard that with the new policy you can now use the old WP if you changed employer or work place. I am confused. I know someone having trouble to cancel the permit as the school director where she worked cannot sign her cancellation letter because the director moved to a different school and the new director will not sign since she was not involved and she did not sign her documents in the first place. As I told you last time they will not accept even if you personally surrender your WP like I did last time so I mailed it to my previous employer. I suggest to make it official for the sake of formality and bureaucracy you make a letter and have them sign. I hope you will sort it out soon.

Thank you for the update.

I don't know about the Ministry of Labor in Bkk, but in Phuket yes if the the employer doesn't cancel your your permit within 15 days of the official last day of employment, then your employer will get fined.

You should post update in your previous post. Not everyone will remember the details of your query.

How about saying where you actually are in thailand so people can know what Ministry of Labor is doing that?
