Hi, I'm retired and wanting to live in Thailand for a year starting in September.

I have 2 properties which bring in approximately 80k baht per month in rent... plus about 1 Mio baht cash.

I do want to give extra lessons online to only non-Thai clients. However, I will only be starting this now so I have no portfolio. Retirement visa vs. DTV? Any suggestions much appreciated.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is considering whether to apply for a retirement visa or a Digital Nomad Visa (DTV) for living in Thailand for a year while teaching online. Comments indicate that a DTV is more suitable for those planning to work online, as retirement visas do not allow any work activities, even remotely.

Get more perks on a retirement visa

what perks?

bank account , easier driving license and motorcycle licence.. Many things are just easier than having a DTV

bank account I agree with. But bank account is not really necessary.

License does not require any visa.

Only difference will be when you renew the licenses.

Can't legally work with the retirement path though.

@Marianne *******
bank is necessary for long term and depending on what country you're from... but obviously you're not up to date with any changes that are happening.. go read up on it mate .. have a good day haha

Bank account is necessary if you want to apply for an extension of stay and you don’t get a affidavit letter from your embassy confirming your income. Beyond this bank account is convenient but not necessary for your stay in Thailand. Regarding driver licence, it does not require any specific visa, but you’ll get five instead of two years on your renewal after two years. People stay for 5 years on a DTV without being entitled to open a bank account. Probably a bit unconvenient for some, but that’s it.

enlighten me, kind sir.

What would require someone to have a bank account if they were here on a DTV?

If he went the Non-O based on retirement-route, he would need one for his extension of stay. But he would then also be eligible for getting one.

But I can't think of anything else that would absolutely require him to have a bank account.

I would honestly love to know.

no, end of conversation, you a clueless .. go have a good day 👍

Seriously though, I really want to know.

But I can't think of anything, so have no idea to what to even look for in my quest for this knowledge.

@Marianne *******
shut up and fuck off..

@Lucas *********
Why? You are making claims, and you are unwilling to back them up. Deflecting the fact by calling me clueless.

I am honestly wanting to know, so I can keep myself updated. But if you're gonna be all "trust me, bro" and not provide any sources for anything, your information is worth nothing and should be disregarded completely.

@Lucas *********
So I'm right then, and you can't actually prove your claims?

Cool, cool.

You can't work with a retirement visa, even remotely, so the DTV is your option. If you have no history to apply under workation then apply using one of the soft power options

you heard of anyone getting DTV for doing Muay Thai courses my friend was in Thailand and asked someone who runs a gym and they said there’s no such thing, but it’s on their posters
John **********
@Tony ************
yes, many people have done so. You just need to apply via an approved Muay Thai gym.

@John *********
anybody know a approved muay Thai gym in Pattaya

If you're working online the DTV is the way to go.
