Is a multiple re-entry permit applied and paid for for at the same time as applying and paying for a 12 month family extension or when collecting the extension stamp 30 days later?

TLDR : Answer Summary
A multiple re-entry permit can be applied for anytime while your application for a 12-month family extension is being processed or after you receive the extension stamp. However, if you acquire a re-entry permit during the application under consideration period, it will only be valid for the existing stamp, making it advisable to wait until you have the full year extension before applying for a more permanent re-entry permit.

If you get a re-entry permit during the under consideration period it is ONLY valid for that stamp.

So if your objective is to have a re-entry permit you can use all next year you wait until you get the year extension inked in and THEN buy a multiple re-entry permit

That's up to you when you want to apply.

You can apply for a re-entry permit, single or multiple, anytime, when your application for your extension is accepted for under-consideration, or after getting a whole year stamp.

The re-entry permit has the same validation as your current stamp. If you are on U/C, your re-entry permit will have the same date as the U/C stamp.

so that means he should not do it when getting the under consideration stamp, except perhaps a single reentry if he plans to go abroad in those weeks?

, there is no "should" or "should not" on that. totally depends on OP's plan.

It sounds like there is a should or should not. I want the multiple re-entry permit validity to begin at the same time as the new 12 month extension, which should be obvious from the context of my question. Therefore it sounds like I should not apply for it at the same time as I apply for that 12 month extension, because it will be provided immediately rather than being tied to the 12 month extension application and processed and commenced concurrently with it

, as I said, depends on your plan, no should or should not from others. It was not obvious to me as I know some people who need to travel frequently almost every couple of weeks. Those are the people who want multiple re-entry permit even for a month.

Anyway, you seem to get your answer. Good luck with your plan (y).
