I’m coming in from Canada and I understand my passport gives me 60 days. I do not want to do a border crossing. When is the best time to apply for the 30 day extension?

TLDR : Answer Summary
If you're planning to apply for a 30-day extension in Thailand, the best time to do so is typically when you have about 30 days or less remaining on your initial 60-day visa. Some immigration offices may allow you to apply as early as 45 days before the visa expiration, while others may require you to wait until 7 days before. Many users suggest going to the immigration office a week before your visa expires for a smoother process. It's advisable to check the specific requirements at your nearest immigration office to ensure you have all necessary documentation, including proof of residency.

Depends on the requirements and conditions of the particular local Thai Immigration Office where the most recent TM.30 had been submitted for you

I did my 30 day extension 2 weeks before my visa expired but I’ve heard people going in 3 days before and are fine. As long as you do it before your 60 days expires you should be fine

Go to the nearest immigration and ask .that way you'll get the correct answer for that office

You cannot go to the nearest immigration office. You go to the immigration office that serves the province where you are registered as staying. That is not always the nearest office, as the nearest office may be in a different province.

We obtained our 30 day extension smoothly from Hua Hin immigration. The end of our first 60 days was the 21st November. We went to immigration on the 10th November.

I think that giving immigration 7 working day prior the end of the first 60 days is reasonable and safe.

If you have to make the application in tight time, make sure the residency proof is in order. I overheard a scene of IM at next counter. She wasn’t happy with the applicant about missing some photo copies of something and also saying “next time should come earlier….”

make sure you are properly TM30 registered by your hotel, resort or landlord. Some Immigrations won't service you if you are not TM30 registered at the place where you stay

Most immigration offices allow when you have 30 days or less left.

Some immigration offices allow when you have 45 days or less left.

A couple allow when you have 7 days or less left.

Since you have not indicated what immigration offices, your question is not possible to answer.
