Hello asking on behalf of my cousin. He is planning to retire to Thailand soon. Unfortunately he is not computer literate.

His question. Can he come in on 30 day visa exempt and either apply at immigration for 30 day extension and or 90 day Non O extension of stay then apply for retirement visa. He is 60 years old with no family and I unable to do this for him as he is in England and Iโ€™m in Ireland.

Regards David Thompson.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user inquires about their cousin's ability to enter Thailand on a 30-day visa exemption and whether he can apply for a 30-day extension at immigration or a 90-day Non-O extension prior to applying for a retirement visa. The response confirms that the cousin can enter on the 30-day exemption without issues and can apply for a 30-day extension for 1900 baht at immigration. To apply for a retirement visa, he would first need to obtain a 90-day Non-O extension, followed by a one-year extension. It is advised that once in Thailand, he should open a bank account and transfer 800,000 baht to meet the financial requirements.

He'll have no issue at all coming in on a 30 day visa exempt entry and then applying for the 30 day extension at the immigration office where he stays for 1900baht

you got the terms wonky but the idea is sound. As far as can he apply for a 'retirement visa' (which is a two step process in country, the 90 day Non-O and then the year extension) he can do that too..

Once he's here, get a bank account opened, get the 800K baht transferred in, and go to the immigration office in his area to get the requirements for the process. It can be done without much issue at all..

@Tod ********
would there be a different process for an American if married to a Thai National?
Tod *********
@Michael ********
there would indeed, and they would get the Non-O based on marriage and then they would get the year extension based on marriage.

BUT

that's not even remotely related to this post,

so if you're going to ask about that process please make your own post

@Tod ********
didnโ€™t mean to offend? Just asking a process question for ppl wanting to relocate with a different background but same reasonโ€ฆ

Apologies!

@Michael ********
no need to apologize at all,

it's a totally valid question (y)

just not one for THIS topic which is about coming in and getting a retirement

visa/extension.

The process would be close to the same, get here get the bank account open get the required funds transferred in, and go apply for first the 90 day Non-O and then the year extension. It'd just be done based on marriage not retirement

The most difficult process for him may be to open a Thai Bank account when on Visa exempt status. I was able to open a Thai bank account 6 years when Visa exempt but I have read this is much more difficult to day than it was 6 years ago. I recommend he attempt to open an account ASAP after he arrives in Thailand.
