What are the requirements for maintaining funds in a bank account for a Marriage Visa in Thailand?

Hello,

I went to Phuket Town Immigration to ask about applying for a Marriage Visa for the first time.

I’m leaving Thailand soon to go back to work and won’t return till October when I will apply for a marriage visa & I wanted to make sure I understood everything correctly.

I was hoping I could get something cleared up please about the length of time funds needed to be in your bank account.

Is it correct that when you apply for your marriage visa the first time you need 400,000baht in the bank only 1 day before you apply?

And then when you apply for your 1 year extension for 3 months later you need to keep 400,000 baht all that time up to the extension date?

(Which makes sense to me)

The part that I’m not sure about is that I was told by the kind officer that after you get the extension you need to keep the 400,000baht in you bank account for 2 months after the start date of your 1 year extension.

I thought and I could well be wrong with a marriage visa that as soon as you got the 1 year extension that you could take the 400,000baht out of your bank account if you wanted too.

I thought it was just for retirement type visas extensions that you had too leave the funds for 2 months after you get the extension.

I likely will leave the funds in my bank account all year long anyway but I just wanted to understand better in case I needed to access the funds in an emergency when I would be able too, and when I could do so without jeopardising my Marriage visa extension.

Thanks in Advance πŸ™

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user seeks clarification on the bank fund requirements for a Marriage Visa in Thailand. They understand that 400,000 baht must be in their account one day before applying for the initial visa and needs to be maintained for three months for a one-year extension. Confusion arises from differing advice on whether the funds must stay in the account for two months after the extension is granted.

Okay the 400k must be in 1 day before initial 90 visa, and remain there until AFTER you receive your 1 year extension.

You can apply for your 1 yr extension as soon as 45 days into the visa BUT no sooner than when the funds "season" for 60 days.

You can use the money once the 1yr extension is granted and stamped.

Essentially your money could be tied up around 3-4 months with "under consideration" time included, it all depends on your timing.

Did you not get the marriage requirements sheet??

For marriage extension the money must be in the bank for 2 full months before you extend. There is no requirement to keep the money after you receive your extension. But each immigration office can make whatever rules they want.

note though that an extension of stay based on marriage is not granted the day you apply for it. Normally there is a 3 or 4 week under consideration period after you apply where they can visit your accommodation, speak to neighbours etc, to verify your marriage is real. I wouldn't touch the money until after this period and you get the actual extension stamped into your passport

the requirement for your one year extension is the bt400,000 has to be in your account for two months before you apply, and as soon as you get your one year extension stamped in your passport, you can do anything you want with the money. There is no requirement that it stays in your account after you get your stamp.
