TLDR : Answer Summary
When applying for a 30-day extension of a 60-day entry stamp at Chiang Mai Immigration, the extension is added to the end of your current stamp, not starting from the day you apply. This means you do not lose any days of the tourism extension by applying early, and you can request the extension up to 45 days in advance.

that's good to hear as I'll have to make a trip into CM for it. Be more convenient if I could do it sooner. Thank you.

A 30-day tourism extension is added (top-up[) to your tourist or visa-exempt entry, not starting from the day of application. You don't "lose" any day of your tourism extension by applying earlier.

applying a couple weeks before the 60 days is up still adds the 30 days after the initial expiry date?
