If I apply for the 30 day extension, does the 30 days begin on the day I go to the immigration office, or is it counted as 60 total days from my original arrival at the airport? I have a 43 day trip in early 2019, and I wanted to go to an immigration office earlier in my trip, if possible. Thanks so much for the tips!!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The 30-day extension period begins from the day you apply for the extension at the immigration office, not from your original arrival date. Therefore, if you apply for the extension earlier in your trip, you will have an additional 30 days from that date.
