Australian living in Thailand for the last 3 years with Thai wife, i have getting by on multi entry spouse visas (as i was under the age of 50) which i obtained from Australia each time (new Visa issued each time, not an extension) . Now in my early 50's if i wish to apply for a 1 yr Retirement visa Non-O, how much cash do i need in the bank and for how long? My current spouse visa doesn't expire until January. Any advice appreciated.

TLDR : Answer Summary

There are a couple things commonly referred to as a retirement visa.

Read this then say if you want to go about it, inside the country or from your country. The requirements are totally different

So I am right in assuming that I can leave my money in Australia and not have large sums in a Thai bank and fly back every 2 years and reapply. thanks so much for your help

@Mark ********
you could indeed, I know people who have been getting Non-O-A visas from their country for years and years and never ever deal with getting an extension of stay inside the country at the immigration office.

if you obtain a O-A visa from Australia and get 2 years out of the visa,can you after the 2 years obtain another visa from Australia and thus avoiding ever having to move

Looks like my 1 yr spouse visa is still the easiest option, no police checks, medicals, money in the bank etc. Thanks for your prompt advice it is appreciated

, look at the website for the thai consulate you'd use in Australia to get the Non-O-A visa.

This is what the thai consulate in Sydney wants

any idea how much funds i need, can the funds be invested in shares etc or do they need to be in a bank savings account for a specific period?

Yep, Armando the year-long, multi-entry Non-Immigrant Type O-A visa from a thai consulate in your country will give you almost TWO years of stay here, is unlimited entries with each entry getting you stamped in for a whole new year (for the validity of the visa) AND you can use funds in your country to meet the financial requirements.
