What visa options are available for a three-year-old child of a Japanese tourist in Thailand?

Need visa advice for my friend's 3 year-old son.

My friend is Japanese and is on a tourist visa. She plans to apply for a Non-Immigration O visa (guardianship) in Tokyo next month as her first older kid has already got ED visa here.

I have heard that for a child under 15 years old, there's no penalty for overstay in Thailand but if she wants to make it technically legal, what kind of visa should her baby apply for?

Thanks in advance.

TLDR : Answer Summary
A Japanese mother in Thailand seeks visa advice for her three-year-old son. Currently on a tourist visa, she plans to apply for a Non-Immigration O visa (guardianship) next month in Tokyo, as her older child holds an ED visa. There is an inquiry regarding the lack of penalties for overstaying for children under 15, and whether any specific visa is required for her youngest to make their stay legally compliant.

When she's back here and applying for the year extension based on being the parent of a foreign child holding an ED visa and enrolled in school here she'll have to show 500K baht in the bank for 30 days before she applies for the year.

Noted. Thanks Tod.

seeing as they're too young to go to school I'd say the only visa that would "fit" would be a Non-Immigrant Type O visa, and then she'd get it extended here once she gets her year extension based on taking care of a child attending school here.

, nope, they couldn't get another extension as tourist visas can only be extended once.

They should apply for a 90 day Non-O visa when they're back in japan.

Many thanks Tod.

Her 3 year-old son just got extension on tourist visa this month so will be valid till 15th April (but they will fly out to Japan on 7th April and come back).

Does her baby need to get another extension before traveling?

Not sure if it can be done.

For herself, she is going to apply for Non-Immigrant Type O as a parent taking care of her eldest son (12 year old) who is studying here so should be no problem.
