Hello, My husband and my son and I are from the United States and would love to visit Thailand for 3 months or longer. It would be our 1st time to Thailand. What exactly would we need to be able to go and stay there for at least three months and then if we want to extend another month do we just go to the embassy and ask for an extension? We do have passports what else would we need. We also would like to look around possibly staying there next time, we find a place they are to stay for about a year. Thank you so much for your help.
Answer summary
A U.S. family looking to visit Thailand for three months or more can apply for a Tourist Visa, which provides a 60-day stay with an option to extend for an additional 30 days at a local immigration office in Thailand. Alternatively, they may consider obtaining a Multiple Entry Tourist Visa (METV), which allows for extended travel within the region and repeated entries into Thailand, with each entry granting 60 days. To secure the METV, the application typically needs to be filled out from the home country prior to arrival in Thailand.

I suggest the Multiple Entry Visa. This way you can keep Thailand as a home base and travel ( Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, wherever you want to go) and when you return to Thailand you get stamped in for another 60 days. With the METV visa you must leave the country before 60 days of being stamped into Thailand. Rinse and repeat.

Do you have experience living and traveling for months in another country?

If so, consider using Thailand as your hub and visiting several of the local countries.

If not, consider visiting Thailand for a month in the cool season.

It’s VERY different from USA and that’s enough time for culture shock. But it’s a really nice place too.

For 3 months a Tourist visa is fine, gets you stamped in for 60 days and you can extend for 30 days at a local immigration office inside Thailand. If you want a bit longer look at the Multiple Entry Tourist Visa, similar to the above but will get you 6 months with an exit and re-entry
