My Son is trying to bring his girlfriend, who's from Laos, back to the UK with him, at the moment they're living in Thailand, which would be the best visa for her? She hardly speaks any English.
Answer summary
The best option for the son’s Lao girlfriend to visit the UK is to apply for a UK Visitor visa, which she can do while living in Thailand. However, she will need to prove her ties to Laos or Thailand, demonstrating that she intends to return after her visit. Comments highlight that she will require documentation, including proof of funds, accommodation plans, and possibly an English language test if she opts for a partner visa in the future. Overall, securing a visa under current UK immigration rules can be challenging, especially without strong ties to her home country.

get her to improve her English as she will be questioned.
It’s very difficult even with return flights guaranteed sponsorship from yourself
You have to provide proof you can afford for her to come to stay with you with at least three months of healthy bank statements and lots of money in your account
From Laos its near on impossible,,, my friend been with a lady from Laos for a few years, they have a business in Jomtien ( Thailand), and he also works for an international company, so travels alot with that job,,, She has no chance of coming uk they tell me for a visit
Speaking from experience, I think he should manage his expectations regarding the visas. I think he’ll be very fortunate to bring her to the UK with a tourist visa and if he decides to venture down the spouse visa route, that is several thousand pounds. The best way, in the long term, is to learn a remote skill and travel to her.
If shes from laos it will be very very difficult especially not being married, plus in laos they are very strict when a foreigner is with a laos national especially not married , even holding hands with her in laos you could get into trouble, he wont be able to stay at her house in laos without the managers permission until they are married, its very strict in laos , people stare at me and my wife because she looks laos
If you're working in Thailand and in a globally recognized company with all the paperworks like Non-B visa, work permit, income statement, employment letter from company you can basically apply tourist visa for any country in Thailand. Because that ensures your identity, why you are applying from Thailand, and that you will be back in Thailand after the trip.
But if you're on a tourist visa in Thailand and want to get visa for other countries, usually that would be impossible and will have to go back to home country to apply.
So for this case most likely will have to apply for UK visa back in Laos.
A Laos citizen can apply for 6 months standard visitor visa is best for her. If you could provide that she is legally in Thailand ( work permit, valid visa or another immigration status ). Application can be made outside her home country. Then after six months your son can decide if he could get her in the Uk permanently either marriage visa or finance visa if the relationship is going to last.
The guy is screwed if he needs his mum's help with this. Which bar is she from. There'll be a few on here probably know her. We've all seen how these stories end.
Henry Durrant im sure there is something if he doesnt own his own house that would also be a problem ? And if they stay at his parents house surely they would of have to visited thailand as well before they invite her ?
I have done all visis hardest think i have even done , first you want a tourist visa not easy even for that , need reson to return main thing , need to see a solicitor best even for that , to marry he needs to earn
Trust me it’s nearly impossible …. Speaking from experience
If the girl had money and bank accounts in Laos or Thailand with her name and good money and income
Of the girl had name on property and owns property
Or if the girl owns a company in Thailand or Laos
Needs to be a professional and speak good amount of English also
With out them things …. It’s like finding a needle in a haystack that’s the reality
+ she would have to go back to Laos to make the visa not from Thailand
My partner also from Laos ….. after £1000s of pounds wasted and much too much time and stress we realised it’s easier just to live in Thailand together ……
Why the heck would anyone take a girl to that sh*tty island with bad food, bad weather, high inflation, chubby girls, and full of barbarians that they once conquered? People only escape that island, they do not go in voluntarily. Also, since your son cannot find ou the answer himself, most likely he is one of those broke bloke that cannot afford to pay for 2 in England. Why live like a slave on that island when he can live like a prince here with mommy's money?
Ivan Brooker I am not talking about Laos. I am talking about England. It is a shitty island. Technically, it has Scotland and Wales attached to it but i like to make it a better insult by calling the whole place a shitty island.
Jean Pacquement if she's living in Thailand legally she can apply for a UK visa via VFS in either Bangkok or Chiang Mai. It's nothing to do with the UK Embassy. UK visas are issued by UKVI.
Standard UK visitor visa. There are companies in Thailand who have helped numerous friends of mines out and have a near 100% success rate. The main thing is he'll want to prove her ties to Thailand / Laos so the UK government are convinced she will return by the end of her visa. The company is called U smile and is based in Pattaya
Thomas Daew yeah if anything like Australia a tourist visa going to be not possible unless she owns house, car and a has a job that has payslips and tax receipts.
Yuie Srihamat Not true. My Lao girlfriend (now wife) was living in Thailand and applied for her UK visa via VFS in Bangkok. Getting a UK visa is nothing to do with the Lao Embassy or any Thai Embassy. It's totally down to UKVI.
To be honest, it will be tough. My WIFE , married in Thailand with docs, translated, legalized, was rejected x2 for a uk visitors visa. The hotline..in Hungary, cost 25£ a minute..justified the rejection with..there is no info suggesting any kind of relationship with this thai woman. The uk can go fk itself
If anything like Australia, and I think it is , it would be impossible especially from Thailand. Maybe if she applied from her home country, had a job to go back to with written evidence from employer, owned property in Laos with evidence to prove it, and a heap of money and bank statements to prove it. Tipping she would fail on all those so I would guess buckleys chances
Tourist visa for sure. She has to demonstrate that she’s going to leave the uk. Ie some income a job or investments and family ties to return.
If he wants to marry her and bring her back on a partner visa amongst other requirements she’ll need to pass an English language test. Contrary to what you hear in the press and certain political parties it’s very difficult to get settlement visa here.
GenuineDolphin2584 English tests A1 first 2.5 years.A2 Second 2.5 years then B1 for ILR. And life it the UK test.
NHS charges 2.5 year x 2 about £6,500 visa on top exams total about £320. My wife Thai, did 5 year marriage visa. Its expensive used solicitor. £6,400 over 5 years.
John Holmes the rules are straightforward enough because they're in black and white, meanwhile in the real world grey areas creep in. Our first tourist visa was turned down at interview because I said we'd been together for "getting on six months". Separately she'd told them the exact date and it was 4 months, 3 weeks and 5 days. That was enough for the Thai bitch interviewing her that either she, myself or both of us were lying.
GenuineDolphin2584 yes..if there's a Thai family member willing to transfer a house or block of land into her name..passes the "reason to return" clause most times.
Sure no worries. I just know many people whom don’t have any relatives from Laos due any reason, also I’ve been know someone who after 20 years found mom lost in Laos. But wait what ? Send assets to lao girl who he just met ? Huh 🤔 are you sure that’s the best option? 😂 just saying… don’t know the couple, wish them both much luck, but better be careful than sorry.
think on your feet..why if she's from Laos might she "have no family at all"?..So If possible get a LAO family member to transfer an asset to her, that may make her seem less of an overstay risk.
She needs a UK Visitor visa. If she's legally living in Thailand she can apply here. She'll need to meet the requirements and attend VFS in Bangkok or Chiang Mai to submit her biometrics. She can also return to Laos and apply there (Vientiene).
