What steps should I take to obtain a Non-B visa and work permit for teaching in Thailand without a TEFL?

Hello everyone.

I wonder if you could be so kind as to help me. I have been offered an English teaching job at a language school but apparently I may need to sort out the non b visa myself which is rather daunting. I have both a degree and a masters, but no tefl. I'm told that the rules have changed in recent months so this seems to be presenting a problem and that an online tefl would not be considered acceptable either. What would be my best course of action in getting a visa/work permit sorted out do you think? Perhaps I should be looking at some sort of agency to help me navigate this?

Thank you so much.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is seeking advice on how to obtain a Non-B visa and work permit for teaching at a language school in Thailand. They have a degree and a master's but do not possess a TEFL certification, which they were told may complicate their visa application. Throughout the comments, various users provide insights about the requirements for the visa and work permit, emphasizing that a TEFL certificate is not mandatory for the Non-B visa. Suggestions include visiting the Ministry of Labor and Immigration Office for official requirements, considering applying from a Thai consulate outside the country, and organizing necessary documents with the school's assistance. Overall, the community provides support and ideas for navigating the visa process.

and I think the O/P has enough information about how to go about getting a non-B visa and work permit at this point (y)

The school have to assist. The majority of the paperwork has to come from them anyway.. the way I/we did it was to use a visa run agency that had done the run for a non b visa multiple times and knew the paperwork like the back of their hand.. you then bang the heads (so to speak) of the school and the agency together until there’s a ‘pile of papers’ good enough for an application. Worked for me.

Also, you are eligible for a non imm b single (don’t worry about the TEFL) your main concern is:

1. Getting all the (correct) paperwork together to submit an application. At a foreign consulate.

2. Making sure that the school will assist you in applying for a work permit (possibly TWO criminal record checks required now), resident certificate, health certificate WITH drug and disease checks. (Some of the paperwork from your non imm b single will be useful here..)

3. Make sure that after gaining your non imm b SINGLE that they are prepared and willing to submit an application to (internal, not foreign consulate) immigration inclusive of a teaching licence within three months (two better) and that the are NOT expecting you to ‘bounce’ every three months on a non imm b MULTI as you CANNOT get these visas anymore and it’s very expensive and time consuming to get a new non imm b single every three months. I hope this helps.

Find a better school that will assist you. Most reputable ones will.

What will you be teaching? A TEFL certificate is only for teaching English. If you've never taught before, why not do a CELTA or equivalent before you go? It will be well worth it.

Try to avoid agent. If you have to pay for your non-B, he will cost you a lot more than doing it yourself. It is not that difficult and you just got the best advice here.

Also if it becomes a bit difficult, a bad agent might just give up or make you pay a lot more.

Thank you so much for this.

Here's the requirements for Non-B visas from the thai consulate in Vientiane. have the school read it and get the documents together so you can go get a 90 day single entry Non-B from them

Visit the Ministry of Labor and ask for the hand out of requirements to get the Work Permit as a Teacher, than visit Immigration Office for the hand out in requirements to get the Non Immigrant B visa. Both hand outs are in Thai and English, bring it to the school staff and let them start preparing the documents.

@Eric ********
nope you're right, some offices can't/won't do it for you (y) Most of the bigger offices will though.
Eric *********
Sorry
@T**
, I meant to transfer from the 60-day tourist visa to the non-imm B--provided there's enough time. If that isn't what you were talking about, sorry for my confusion.
Eric *********
If I may add, some offices within Thailand flat out refuse to transfer the visa over...or at least the office nearest me has refused for the past few years. 😫

Ah ok. That may well be the problem. They were trying to get the non b visa inside the country and so ran into problems that would not be there if I go to do it outside. That makes a lot of sense, thank you.
Tod *********
@James *******
The only down side IS; in order to get a 90 day Non-B visa from an immigration office INSIDE the country you need at least 15 days left on your current stamp (because they go under consideration for 14 days before you go back to get it stamped into your passport).

Also the requirements to get a Non-B visa INSIDE the country are far more stringent than to get one from a thai consulate in a neighboring country.

Have the school look at the requirements from a thai consulate nearby and get that documentation together so you can go and apply for a 90 day single entry Non-B

Thank you, that sounds like good advice.

I know this won't be sorted out before then of course.

A tourist visa that I extended in Laos. But it is due to expire in a couple of weeks.
James ********
ORIGINAL POSTER
Yes. I was led to believe that they were in the process of sorting it out while the clock ticked down. But it all came to naught.
Tod *********
@James *******
Okay, so you've pretty much burned the time you had available down.

Now we're getting some where (y)
James ********

It was the 60 day, then extended for a further 30 at Chaeng Wattana.
Tod *********
there is no way to extend a tourist visa outside the country. SO you either BOUGHT a single entry tourist visa from a thai consulate in a nearby country and were stamped in for 60 days when you entered OR you got a 30 day visa exempt entry by just crossing the border and comin' back

Which one of those are you actually on?
Tod *********
How about we start with an easy question first ? ;)

What type of visa and/or extension of stay are you on currently?
Robert ********
This is a popular site for teaching English in Thailand...ww.ajarn.com
James ********
ORIGINAL POSTER
Yes thank you, I should suggest that.
Robert ********
@James *******
Then they should go to Immigration with you and find out.
James ********

Thank you for your response and I agree with you, they really should. But they don't, which is why I am stuck.
Robert ********
Your employer should know the requirements for you to work legally here and are responsible to provide you with the documents for your Non-B visa.
Eric *********
A CELTA/TESOL certificate/TEFL certificate is not a requirement for a non-imm B visa related to teaching...nor is it a requirement for the WP.

And if I may offer some unsolicited advice: any school that cannot help navigate visas/WPs should be approached with caution.
Taisiia **************
Sure!
James ********
@Eric ********
be very cautious.

This Is Thailand!

@Eric ********
It makes sense. It could mean that the school is not interested in teachers being lawful. The same for any other company
Eric *********
@Li**
, it's a bit like trying to prove a false negative. Unless I've missed some significant news, there's no such official requirement for a WP related to teaching.
Phil *******
@Eric ********
Robert's answer is related of course!

@Eric ********
we specialise in placement of teachers and were under the same impression. However the dept labour are now insisting on us providing TEFL certificates with the paperwork even for our degree holders and we have had some declined as an Online TEFL not accepted. We are trying to pinpoint the rules however it seems to be different depending on the province our teachers are in ! So any official link etc saying TEFL not required would help us please !
Robert ********
@Eric ********
It is actually....
Eric *********
Another warning sign...the school should be able to supply the docs necessary for the non-imm B application straight away. Delays either mean the school isn't able to supply all the docs (not licensed, not paid up on tax, etc.) or they're stringing you along until they want to commit to making you a legal employee.

I'm not saying you're about to work for a bad school but they're not off to a great start.

Ah, that is good to know. I wonder what the problem is that they are having then. The language barrier makes it impossible for me to get to the bottom of it as they have a Thai staff member 'dealing' with it.
Eric *********
@Robert ***********
Absolutely, but also unrelated to the question being asked. ;)
Robert ********
Not a requirement but often preferred and teachers with these credentials usually have better chances of employment.
