Hello everyone! I hope the following question is relevant and hasn't been answered a million times before.

Otherwise, admin please feel free to delete the post.

I've been offered a teaching job in Chiang Mai and will be going to Vientiane at the end of the month/beginning of the next, to get my Non-Immigrant Visa "B".

Of all the paperwork mentioned by the school, there is one I'm a bit confused about. They say I need a TEFL certificate, is this true?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The requirement for a TEFL certificate when obtaining a Non-Immigrant Visa B for teaching in Thailand can vary. While many schools prefer candidates with a TEFL certification, it is not a mandatory requirement for the visa itself. However, it can enhance your chances of employment and is often recommended, especially for those unfamiliar with Thai culture and education. It's advisable to check with the school regarding their specific requirements, as some may still insist on a TEFL for hiring.

, as the others have stated, the TEFL is often preferred by some schools but is NOT a requirement. However, many Academic Directors will give preference to hiring teachers that have completed a standard 120 hrs course, particularly a Thailand based course as it helps acclimate the teacher to better understand Thai culture and teaching Thai students. I did my TEFL in Bangkok when i first arrived, before teaching here for many years. Good luck! You can look at this website to learn more about TEFL programs offered in Thailand and the costs.

I suggest visiting a number of schools and observe classes before selecting a program...sit in on some classes and ask questions of the students to get their feedback. When I attended, we had classes for a half-day so some of us could teach for the other half-day as well....and many schools approach TEFL programs to find teachers to fill positions, so it is easier to find work once you "graduate".

Thinking of doing one in the next couple of months, thanks :)

You must provide this to get the Visa: "Applicant must provide copies of documentation showing

qualifications for teaching including but not limited to diplomas,

certificates, letters verifying teaching experience, teaching

credentials, educational background, resume, etc."

For visa. no

For school. Depends on your school.

Ahsan is correct, you dont need a TEFL for the visa but some schools require it.

That's what I thought!

Not necessary. But of course, the school may require it. Perhaps you could negotiate with the school. Start teaching for the school based on your degree and enroll in a TEFL course. You would have little difficulty completing it.

Go there and try. Have proof of your degree with you. I do not think that you have a problem.

That's what I said to them, they are just worried Vientiane would not process the visa if I don't have one when I get there.
