Not sure if this is the right place to ask…but I’m looking into washing out in Thailand for 14 days before going to HK. I’m coming from the US, one of the 8 banned countries. How’s the flight situation like from Bangkok/Phuket to HK? I’ve been hearing flights getting banned and Thailand seems to be one of those washout destinations thats “easy in but difficult to get out”. However in the meantime I still see plenty of flights available and selling tickets online so I got confused. If anyone currently washing out in Thailand and can share their experience, that would be very helpful. Thank you!

So I came to Bangkok to do the washout for HK as well, while I was here they changed their QT rules so I decided to stay here instead. Yes its a good option but come prepared for the possibility of staying here a bit longer in case they change their rules. I basically gave up on HK for a while and I am enjoying the freedom here inThailand.

I figured about a month to get all my paper work in order. My situation differs from yours in that I wanted a visa and test-and-go was not available at the time.. None-the-less, the paperwork is a real pain and I wouldn't do it if I had alternatives. I love Thailand but the visa/tourist paperwork has become too much for the casual visit. I think all these still apply to you

- pay for everything in advance

- do multiple test (not bad but you have to 72 hours before, which is another pain)

- do Thai pass - worth avoiding and not coming. You may have to dance around with this one.

- buy bogus insurance. It maybe real. I have not heard of people make claims, doesn't mean it doesn't happen.. You can't bring your own insurance it must be Thai Government endorsed. They say you can bring your own insurance but it has to meet certain criteria (see my notes about the pain Thai Pass).

Pay in advance isn't so bad except if you have to reschedule because Thai pass is delayed.

If I had to do it all over again and I needed to come to Thailand. I would contact the hotel first. Make sure they are responsive (answer calls, emails, Line - if you use it). Then buy plane tickets then buy hotel. Then start the process. For Sandbox they recommend 3 weeks process time for ThaiPass (15 working days). Pay mind to Thai holidays, they'll add to process time.. Songrkran is mid April (+ week process time).

Fiji - you just go

Mexico- you just go

Not terrible getting stuck in Thailand and laundry very reasonable... About 40 Baht/kilo... They will washout, but ironing not included

Wrong way round. Thailand is one of those countries where it's easy to leave but very difficult to get in.

What does "washing out" mean?
Troy *******
I think it means like having a metaphoric genocide around you... But it's sounds like a heroin rehab process.

Good luck.

Just had my Bangkok-Hong Kong-Vancouver flight changed to connect through Tokyo

Same route canceled for us as well. Seems HK is not an option
Mitchell *******
@Mike ******
, ya HKG disappeared as a connection for the next few months unfortunately. It truly is/was the gateway to SE Asia.
Mitchell *******
Ah. I am usually going/coming from North America. As the saying goes, 2 different people can see the same thing 2 different ways, and both be right. 🙂
Paul *******
@Mitchell ******
I'd say that title goes to Singapore. Hong Kong was a major gateway, but Singapore has always had much more flights to SE Asia and Australia/New Zealand than Hong Kong.
Astrid **********
It's more difficult to get in 😆

@Astrid *********
For sure. I had to laugh when she said it's difficult to leave but easy to enter. The reality suggests otherwise. It's always been easy to leave Thailand (even at the very beginning of the Covid crisis) but getting in is another story.
Michael *******
It's commonly referred to as Abnam.

You wanna wash out ?? Take a shower , a bath or whatever
Steve *******
Washing out? WTF does that mean?
Brandon ************
Flights will always be for sale whether they are allowed or not. It matters little to the airline since they have your money at that point.
Terary **********
@Brandon ***********
They want your money. Its not too important to them if they have the ability to earn it or not.

If I knew what “washing out” was I might be able to comment. Never heard the term.

@Stuart ********
yep I learnt a new term today too. Initially I thought it must relate to getting clean off class A drugs. Then I thought perhaps it means having a long stay near the ocean🤣

@Stuart ********
Same here, never heard the term before. As I get older, there are more and more terms that are alien to me. Learned something new.

It's very niche and specialized, so OP shouldn't have assumed that everyone knows it. Comes across as arrogant.

@Brian ********
I’d never heard the term either, but the OP made it clear in her post what it means.

same as that, no idea what it means,

Wow you learn something new every day. “Washing out”. New one for me.

HK is one of the hardest places to enter during the pandemic. Formerly, the rule was that if you were from a Group "A" risk country (which was a very large list of countries), you cannot enter Hong Kong if you are not a HK resident without "washing out" for 21 days outside a Group A country. People from Group B-risk countries are allowed in if they have only been in the Group B countries for at least 14 days. But now 8 countries like the US, Canada, France, Australia and the UK are in an even higher category which is completely banned from entry, even for HK residents, unless the person has met the dual rules of having spent 21 days outside those countries AND also 14 days in a Group B country. So in other words, if someone is coming from the US, even if they live in HK, they must spend 21 days outside one of those countries, and also must go to a country like Mexico (or Thailand) and spend 14 days there "washing out" before they are allowed to come to HK, where like all arrivals, they will then have to spend 21 days in a self-paid hotel room quarantine where they must undergo a total of 8 RT-PCR tests during their quarantine. Essentially an American or a Brit or an Australian has to spend a total of 42 days between the washout period and the quarantine period from the time they leave their country until the moment they are free to walk the streets of Hong Kong. Makes Thailand's AQ and Sandbox programs look like a breeze. This is why I have little patience for people who criticize Thailand's minor restrictions. I'm always like, do you realize it would take you 42 days in order to visit HK? So don't complain about 7 days or about a Day 1 and Day 5 test.

Stuart Cumming, a little bit like "crikky" (sp?) or "chuck it in, eh?

@Stuart ********
Ya same here.

@Stuart ********
"washing out" means staying on a country not currently banned by HK. Ex. Since US is banned by HK right now, you basically "wash out" (the ban status) at Thailand as Thailand is not banned by HK.
Cliff *********
@L**
"Wash out " the Covid cooties. A new and enlightening concept for me.

Bigger question: Why try to go to HK or Mainland at this time unless it’s for job or family?
L**
@Cliff ********
it varies for each person.

In my case, I need to go back to HK for job purposes (transfer the sponsorship of my working visa to the next employer).
Cliff *********
@L**
Good luck with your journey and Happy New Year.

Hopefully we can visit soon more easily.
Steve *******
@L**
The term is drying out. Washing out makes no sense.

I think its to be different to the drug addicts .

Taking tests .

@Stuart ********
you should be better at guessing games by now, think she means she can’t go to HK from the US so she needs to spend X amount of time elsewhere so she’s not “coming from the US”
