⚠️ DTV UPDATE: Something I think people should know
Just wanted to share my experience because I think it could be useful for anyone currently applying for the DTV, especially if you’re applying with a passport that expires before the full 5-year DTV period.
I submitted my DTV application from BRUSSELS on 22 July and finally received my approval on 24 August, so it took one month and two days.
I was approved 🎉 BUT… there was a little surprise.
My passport expires on 22 February 2031, and instead of giving me the full 5-year DTV validity until 24 August 2031, the embassy issued the visa only until my passport expiration date.
I contacted the embassy directly to ask about this, and they confirmed that this was intentional.
This honestly surprised me because the DTV is presented as a 5-year multiple-entry visa, and my understanding was that the visa is granted to the person, rather than simply being tied to the remaining validity of the passport.
So in my particular case, I ended up receiving approximately 4.5 years instead of the full 5 years.
And this is something I really think people should be aware of before applying.
It also makes me wonder how consistently this is being handled between different embassies/consulates, because from everything I’ve been seeing in the DTV groups, there seem to be quite a few differences in how applications are interpreted and processed.
So I wouldn’t necessarily assume that getting approved automatically means you’ll receive the full 5 years. Check the actual validity dates on your issued visa.
I’m now starting the process for my dependents, my partner and daughter, and of course, in the meantime, Thailand has introduced additional requirements around applying from your country of legal residence and providing a criminal record… 😅
So the DTV journey continues.
Sharing this simply so others can double-check everything and know that this can happen. ❤️
If anyone else has received a DTV that was shortened because of their passport expiry, I’d genuinely be interested to hear your experience, because I think it would be useful to compare how different embassies are handling this.
