What should I expect when re-entering Thailand with multiple entries on a DTV?

Had a really strange immigration experience coming back into Thailand a few days ago, and I’m curious if anyone else on DTV has run into something similar.

For context, I’ve been in Thailand cumulatively for about a year, but during that time I’ve also been traveling a lot. Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, and elsewhere. My passport has stamps from all over. This has never been a case of staying in Thailand for long continuous stretches and doing border runs. I’ve never done a border run in my life. I’ve always left the country properly, traveled normally, and applied for the correct visas when I wanted to stay longer. Everything fully by the book.

This time around, I had been in Phuket for about two and a half months, left to travel, spent five days in Japan, and then flew back into Phuket.

At immigration, the officer started flipping through my passport and counting entries. He looked genuinely confused and concerned. A lot of staring at the passport, then at me, then back at the passport.

I told him I’m on DTV. He said he knew, but didn’t seem confident. He turned around and asked another officer about my passport and the number of entries, then called over his supervisor.

From what I could understand, she immediately recognized it as DTV and explained that multiple entries are normal and expected. After a couple minutes, she said okay and walked away.

Even after that, the officer still seemed hesitant. He didn’t stamp my passport. He wrote the date in by hand instead. Before letting me through, he said something about “long stay” and “one year,” and then told me that next time I come back I’ll likely be interrogated or sent to secondary or tertiary screening.

That honestly caught me off guard. I’ve followed the rules exactly. No overstays, no border runs, no working locally, no Thai clients. I travel because I want to and because I can, not to game the system.

I’ve entered Thailand many times over the years and this was the first time I’ve ever had any issue at immig
Answer summary
The user shares a recent immigration experience upon returning to Phuket after traveling abroad, detailing how the officer scrutinized their passport due to multiple entries associated with their DTV visa. Despite the user's adherence to immigration rules, the officer appeared confused and hesitant, leading to concerns about future entries. Comments from other users suggest that Phuket immigration is stricter recently, potentially due to an influx of rule-violating visitors, and advise on using alternative entry points like Bangkok.

I re-entered via Phuket Airport last week after having spent 5 months in Thailand and a couple days in Malaysia without any issue whatsoever.

Phuket is unfortunately full of people misbehaving lately, just read the news. They’re definitely becoming more strict with everyone. And I’m not talking only about DTV holders, but also tourists and people on other visas. Comments on this post and others in this group and in other groups too definitely confirm this new trend.

You got a bad agent. You're fine. You have a valid visa

I’ve had similar experience at Phuket Airport last month. Before that, I had over 100 entries on the DTV (Workation) with no issues through multiple different airports. No history of border runs or previous visas and was never questioned before up til that point.

Got grilled with questions (e.g. why am I here, why am I on the DTV, what do I do for work, why don’t I use visa-free etc…) Was ultimately stamped in although the IO seemed very reluctant/upset about it.

I think the officers at Phuket are pressed for whatever reason, but my subsequent trips thru DMK & BKK were back to normal without any questioning.

This happened to me when I came into Bangkok from Cambodia. Exact same thing, flipping of the passport counting stamps and muttering to self. Now I am nervous as I am traveling to Vietnam for a w week.

A whole recent crackdown kind of started in Phuket, I'd avoid it. You have nothing to worry about.

Phuket immigration have taken the clampdown to heart and treat everyone with suspicion. Another DTV holder claimed they made him buy an onward ticket. I've been advising people to avoid entering via Phuket

Avoid entering the country through Phuket at all costs. They're incentivized to deny entry since there are so many sh*t foreigners in Phuket already.

You were greeted by a fairly new immigration agent, that has been heavily schooled on watching for extensive entries during the year. Most likely he hasn't seen dtv holders with that many repeated entries, and made sure of what to do. It's normal, unless you received your dtv under the softpower category.

are you suggesting those on soft power cannot have multiple entries on a DRV?

not at all. I'm simply saying immigration could very easily question how someone could be regularly taking classes when they are traveling all the time.

And you haven’t read the replies on this post or on many others from plenty of non-anonymous people who have observed a change in Phuket. Yes, agents are angry but that doesn't mean all posts are written by these persons.

This is all about personalities. The initial officer didn’t know his job well (possibly new in the job or a new type of visa) and then wanted to ascertain his authority after he was schooled by his supervisor. Nothing to worry. All will go well.

All of mine are handwritten, it's not out of the norm, and as for the scrutiny he was being a cuck. You're good, enjoy DTV freedom (stop flying internationally to phuket) fly to BKK first then phuket.

Fly into BKK as Phuket is known to be strict.

strict usually means “following the rules exactly with no wiggle room.”

The DTV allows multiple entries. This isn’t strict. It’s odd.

Nobody owes you an entry lol its always at the discretion of the officer and its in his power to deny

MFA grants you a visa, not Immigration. Immigration does its own job. Their authority to check your eligibility and question you overrides any rights you think you have from holding a visa, and that’s probably true in most countries.

KnowledgeableBee6652 the probable reason can always be found afterwards. Yes, they can f you over based on whatever they think or feel. they report to their superiors who wouldn't listen to your entitled rant anyway, just be nice you are a guest

Anonymous participant 671 They technically do owe you entry if THEY granted you an official visa that legally states you have entry permission lol kinda weird to think otherwise lol

Anonymous participant 671 denial must have a reason, they can’t randomly deny if the have a bad mood or something

Technically your entry is always subject to the discretion of the IO.
