What should I know about activating a DTV visa in Thailand?

Dunno if anyone saw this on Instagram (I didn't, someone sent it to me :P )

This should be a lesson for ALL people who apply for a DTV :O

This person applied for their DTV either while they were inside thailand or they came here after they applied but before it was approved. Then they got the DTV approved

BUT

they didn't realize in order to activate it you have to exit (to get OFF the current stamp you're on) and then re-enter presenting the DTV when you stamp in (to get ON the new DTV).

They just thought they were good to go, and ended up overstaying their free stamp entry by more than 90 days <- which means when you leave the country you're automatically banned for a year :O

Lucky for them, they weren't caught out inside the country while on that overstay because an overstay like that gets an automatic FIVE YEAR ban if you're caught inside.

So moral of the story people;

If you apply for a DTV either while you're already in thailand <- (which is totally against the eVisa / DTV rules) or if you apply then come to thailand before it's approved (which is frowned upon but allowed) once you do get the visa approved make sure you bounce out/back to activate the DTV :)

Hard lesson for this kid to learn, but good news is, he's got a 5 year DTV and can still get 4 years of stay out of it once he stays out of the country for the year he's banned :O

TLDR : Answer Summary
A cautionary tale about misunderstanding the activation process for Thailand's Digital Nomad Visa (DTV) emphasizes the importance of adhering to immigration rules. After an individual applied for their DTV, they didn't realize that to activate it, they had to leave Thailand and then re-enter with the DTV approval. This oversight led to an overstay, resulting in a potential one-year ban from the country. The discussion highlights the necessity of reading DTV guidelines thoroughly and understanding the consequences of immigration missteps.

DTV will catch up with most who are on it

You have to be earning real money as a interneter (very few do ! )

Or

You have to be attending corrupt govt sanctioned courses during your period of stay

The problem with this guy, is that even if he had been on his DTV, he would have ended up overstaying. In his comments he states that when he got his DTV last year, there was little information available for him to learn the rules. That means he thought he was on the DTV since 2024, well over 180 days and had not attempted to extend or exit on time at six months.

It seems that they applied for a DTV and then entered the country BEFORE it was approved thinking once it was approved their stamp would "magically switch over" to the 180 day DTV entry stamp from the 60 day free stamp they got when they showed up here without any visa 😕

@Tod ********
he didn’t even leave the country, he used a visa agent and sounds like he didn’t even apply from outside

It would appear he was in his country when he contracted with the agency to apply. But then came to Thailand without telling them before the Visa was approved

Sweet *****
All those DTV holders who were complaining about waiting 10 days for their visas in Phnom Penh, Ho Chi Minh etc, this poor guy needs to wait a year 🫤

I think I saw this guy's video, earrings, fat neck chain, and nose ring or piercings if I recall. He had an agent do it. If immigration didn't get him the fashion police would.

It's amazing how little people can comprehend while reading, or it's amazing how people go through life without actually reading what they are supposed to. If this person had actually read any of the DTV guidelines or application process, this would have been 100% clear to them.

So he did everything by himself right not paying any agents to do it?

Anonymous participant 106nope

He contracted with an agent to apply for him, which is totally allowed and above board,

his mistake was coming here before the Visa was approved and then thinking that just because it was approved his 60-day entry stamp would magically turn into a 180-day DTV stamp

I don't have instagram so I couldn't read the comments on the thread to see if they used an agent while they were in the country or applied on their own then came here before it was approved
