What should I expect when applying for a visa extension with an expiring passport in Thailand?
I have a non-o based on thai spouse. current ext. expires sept 25. i'm going next week to apply for the extension. not anticipating any issues but my current passport expires june 2027. does this mean that when i apply for my next extension next week i will only receive a stamp until june 2027? I am planning on applying for a new passport in november after two international trips. once i receive that I am assuming I can take that to immigration and they can transfer my extension into my new passport, correct? I use chiang rai.
So I am just wondering what to expect? Only an extension until June 2027 - and have to reapply for my year and start a new cycle with banking etc, or will they potentially allow me to keep my current cycle which is the end of september. Thanks.

Most passports can be renewed not earleier than 6 months before expiry.

Also, if you didn't already, you could get 60 days extension for visiting family. Get a new passport. Get that stamp moved into your new passport. Then get a full 1 year extension of stay. In the new passport, expire November.

OPRichard Mambour don't have time to do it, extension expires in 10 days. So will just have to lose a few months for this extension and start a new cycle time. Not the end of the world.

I don't know how important/convenient the September renewal date is for you but you could in theory keep it by not extending immediately before June next year, but instead go on a Visa run and getting another 90 Day non O from a nearby consulate, which would take you into September when you would apply for a yearly extension.

actually the September cycle is not great for me. June would be better. I usually always need to leave the country in October for one thing or another so, kids are on break etc…. So another time would be better. Just trying to plan and think about it.

Well, there you go. You didn't exactly plan it, but you're going to get what you want, which is a new annual cycle for extensions.If folks want a new different annual cycle, they can manipulate that by how they play their expiring passports.
If they want to maintain a cycle and have a passport expiry issue that would change it then it's good to get the passport renewal done early.

They stopped letting people show up with new passports and get the balance of the year extension inked in because you got an extension on a passport which wasn't valid a full year a good number of years ago
So it's 100% certain you will only get an extension valid until your current passport expires

right the banked money method seasoning will need to be done 2 months before you apply for the extension in June 2027

yea that is what i did not consider and already too late to rewnew my passport bc my extension is up in 2 weeks but yesterday i was thinking about it and that is what prompted me starting this thread. having to do this process again in 9 months vs 12 months doesnt sound the most fun but overall i think my new 'cycle' time will be better for my own schedule.

yes, but still important for some to know that it exists, because neither the bank nor immigration will tell you about it in advance.

yes, I switched banks last year because of this. KB is much better 👌Alex *****

note that one bank (BB) is currently requiring four months of deposit ‘pledge’, in order to issue the certificate required by immigration. So, if you don’t want funds locked up for the extra two months, use a bank that doesn’t have initials BB.
