With my stay extension coming due 2/1/'26 I have remembered my passport expires 9/'26. Does that mean I need to renew my passport prior to extension to get the full year '2026 ?

TLDR : Answer Summary
Yes, you should renew your passport before applying for your visa extension. If your passport is set to expire in September '26, any extension granted will only be valid until that expiration date. To obtain a full year's extension, it's advisable to renew your passport first.

You will not recover the "lost" months when you get your new passport so renew your passport before extending or have to do your future 12 month extensions in September which may actually suit you ;)

It does indeed, because if you don't you will only get an extension valid until the expiration date of your current passport

Renew the passport before you apply for the year extension (y)
