My VOA expires on 25th this month.. I did an extension after 30 days. So can I just goto Burma border and come back for another VOA stamp? Or is this something that only happens at the airport.. What do I need to do in this case? Any help appreciated!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user inquires about the possibility of extending their stay in Thailand by making a border run to Burma, given that their Visa on Arrival has expired after being extended once. Multiple responses clarify that the user has a 30-day visa exempt stamp, which they can effectively extend by leaving the country and re-entering. However, a new rule allows only two entries via land borders within a calendar year, which is important to keep in mind for future trips.

- seeing as this group is of no use to you, (you do your own research and Immigration talk to you), maybe it would be better if we parted ways. Goodbye.

It is simple to read accurate rules on immigration Webb site when it comes down to tourists. Certainly another category can be very complex. No advice from others can ever be totally accurate when it comes to Thai embassies in the immediately are as the rules are often applied differently at different locations. I've called immigration by phone more than once and always been answered as well as being factually informed.

Hi Jim James, there are many classifications of stamps within Immigration which a foreigner is not versed in. Similarly websites offering advice which may be contradicting or false. Immigration website is only partially in English while calls are hardly picked up. Even adhering to written procedures are useless with an officer in bad mood. So Thai Visa Advice is set up to help all visiting foreigners in any way possible.

jim, yeh i have checked out many places online for all this info.. Its all hazy and not concrete. better to hear from people that have gone through the process.. Anyhow. WTF is this group for if not to ask for Thai Visa advice?

. Stupid comment. Yes I have, but only after putting in my own effort, he has not, and appears not to listen either. He's going to get another exemption, has extended one beforehand, so simple logic should tell him, the same will apply,after being told he can do it twice overland. How did he know,he could fly in and be admitted at all.imop,him and many just like him,use the exempt entry to save money. Thailand is too easy on " tourists." With the exception of Malaysia, every other country charges and issues a visa for 30 day stays.

@Jim ******
never needs advice ;-)

He just goes on and on. Pretty simple to find out what visa he hasn't got,how many land ones he's allowed etc. He could even call immigration. The guy puts in no effort like so many.

@J**
, the visa, extension, visa exempt etc process here is more than a little convoluted. :O Plus the inter-web is littered with bad and wrong information.

You can hardly fault someone for comin' on a group titled Thai Visa Advice and asking for thai visa advice can you? ;)

ahh ok, but that basically gives me another 60 days WITH an extension after 30 days correct?
Tod *********
Richard, You wouldn't even get stamped OUT of thailand at that border IF the immigration officers knew you couldn't come right back in on a visa exempt entry. They just tell you "Cannot leave".
Richard *****

this is the scenario i am trying to avoid.
Richard *****

ok so i would be stuck correct?
Tod *********
@Ric****
, no it's nothing about the money.

At that border all you're doing is buying a 'day pass' to the burmese city Tachiliek.

IF you don't hold a valid "visa" to get into burma they won't let you stamp out at that crossing if you already have 2 visa exempt entries by a land border this year.

just didn't want to be stuck in some country

cool so basically have money not stuck
Tod *********
@Ric****
, they just wouldn't let you stamp out of that border. You can't get "into" burma from there on just that $10USD day pass you buy.

Tod thanks for all the answers man I appreciate it.

just curious.. what would happen if i did NOT know about that 2 exempt stamp rule and tried to cross border back into thailand.. i be stuck in burma? or they have some free days to give me to get my shit and fly out?
Tod *********
@Richard ********
plus what it costs to get to the thai consulate in Vientiane and back. You turn in your passport in the morning and pick it up the next afternoon.
Richard *****
ORIGINAL POSTER
ahh cool so 3 months for 3k baht
Tod *********
Richard, the thai consulate in Vientiane Lao is probably the easiest for you.

You could get a single entry tourist visa from them for 1000baht.

When you enter thailand you'd get stamped in for 60 days and you could extend that by 30 more days at the immigration office for 1900baht.

and is it very complicated? sorry if these already answered questions.

and does that give me how many months?

if i am in chiang mai
Richard *****
ORIGINAL POSTER
ahh ok if i am in chiang mai for future reference where is the best place to do this visa-run ?
Tod *********
@Ric****
, umm, you can't BUY a visa from the border-bounce ;)

That's a "visa-run" where you go to a thai consulate in another country and buy a visa. Entering on a valid visa by air or land doesn't count.
Richard *****
ORIGINAL POSTER
tod cool man, so what happens when you get a visa from a border run, what is the difference?
Tod *********
@Ric****
, land border crossings only. If you fly in (in theory) there is no limit to visa exempt entries.
Richard *****
ORIGINAL POSTER
ohh sorry i see you said land border.
Richard *****
ORIGINAL POSTER
that 2 visa exempt rule applies to the ones they issue at airport or just borders?
Tod *********
right (y)
Tod *********
Not to be pedantic but what you don't have is a Visa On Arrival ;)

You have a 30 day visa exempt stamp, that you extended for 30 days

The short answer is yes, you can "border-bounce" at the Mae Sai - Tachiliek border with burma to get a 30 day visa exempt stamp.

BUT know that they started a rule on Dec 31st, 2016 that limits visa exempt entries by a land border to TWO in a calendar year.. You'd burn one of those bouncing at Mae Sai
Robert *******
It looks like you're American, so you can get a 30 day Visa Exempt Stamp not a Visa on Arrival. Be aware that you can only do this twice a year at land border checkpoints.
