TLDR : Answer Summary
The poster is facing a problem where they received a tourist visa stamp instead of the intended 3-month Non-B visa upon entering Thailand. They overlooked this mistake and discovered it only while renewing their visa. The comments provide advice to check visa stamps at the time of entry and suggest two possible solutions: either the immigration office can correct the stamp error by reissuing the Non-B visa, or the poster may have to leave Thailand, pay an overstay fine, and then re-enter on the valid Non-B visa.

Until the O/P goes to the immigration office and sees what if anything they will do, I cannot see anything to be gained by leaving this open to comments..

OKAY let this be a lesson to everyone when you stamp into the country CHECK your entry stamp WHILE you are standing at passport control BEFORE you walk away from that desk.

The story; the O/P bought a 90 day single entry Non-B visa from a thai consulate in Malaysia in early Oct. When they entered thailand the passport control officer did NOT cancel the visa and stamp them in for 90 days BUT gave them a 30 day visa exempt entry stamp.

The O/P did not look at the passport when they stamped in to make sure they were in on the Non-B, and in fact they did not look at the passport at all until they were getting ready to go apply for an extension on the Non-B visa.

That's when it was discovered that they did NOT enter the country on the Non-B visa (it was not marked used) and instead were stamped in on a 30 day visa exempt entry (which expired on the 5th of Nov).

The solution to this can go one of two ways;

The immigration office CAN cancel the Non-B visa and give the O/P a new 90 day entry stamp dated from the date they originally came into the country

OR

The immigration office can say, you DIDN'T enter on that Non-B visa, you entered on a 30 day visa exempt entry and you are now on a 3 day overstay. Go to the border, pay the overstay fine, stamp out of thailand, stamp in&out of another country and stamp back IN to thailand ON the unused (and still valid) Non-B visa.

It's a toss up on what the immigration office will do. BUT they definitely have the power to cancel the Non-B visa AND give the O/P a new 90 day stamp dated from their original entry date IF they want to.

ONE LAST TIME PEOPLE <- check your entry stamps when you are at the passport control desk stamping in because it's YOUR passport, your entry stamp and your responsibility to get stamped in for the right amount of time you are supposed to be.

Good Luck to the O/P.
