What should I do if I need a NIE to proceed with my visa application in Spain but I'm not a resident?

UPDATE: After 10 days I have been approved for the DTV visa.

After been asked for a NIE (document for foreign residents in Spain) I sent my DNi from my native country expecting to be rejected and denied the visa.

But, they then required a hotel booking for proof of location or rental contract or letter of invitation(even though already sent it when initially applied).

This was checked on the same day and got the approval in the evening on my email 🙂

I applied for my DTV in Spain but I'm from another country, I few weeks ago a british guy got it approved here and as a proof of location he added his airbnb reservation so thats what I also attached. I'm now being requested as an extra documentation a NIE which it's a document that only Spanish residents own. Any advice on how to proceed?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user shares an update about receiving approval for their DTV visa after initially being asked for a NIE, a document typically required for foreign residents in Spain. They sought advice on the necessity of the NIE and alternatives, as some commenters clarified that a NIE is crucial for visa applications in Spain and explained the requirements for EU and non-EU citizens. The user successfully provided alternative proof of residence, leading to their visa approval.

If you are not resident in Spain how do you prove your remote job?

Do you have any NIE?

You need a NIE verde (if you're EU citizen) or TIE (if non EU) to prove your legal residence in Spain. You might be able to convince them to accept Empadronamiento instead but even that is not easy to get. No way around this requirement, they clearly say, to apply in Spain you have to be a resident there.

I asked them by email before applying and they confirmed they accept the white paper A4 size nie document (even as this doesn't prove residency). I guess it proves you have some connection to Spain. Anyway your incorrect reply highlights the need to ask the consulate directly for their requirements instead of trusting online advice.

A NIE is not something that Spanish citizens have. It’s a foreigner’s (to Spain) identity number. If you’re living in Spain you’d probably need one for many things like buying a car and stuff. If you’re just visiting then it’s going to be around 6 weeks to get one if you qualify

They aren't talking about NIE as just the number on a piece of paper as it doesn't prove residency. What they mean is Certificado de ciudadano de la UE (commonly known as NIE Verde or just NIE). All EU citizens living in Spain for over 3 months are legally required to have one. Non-EU should have a TIE.

NIE Verde is issued the same day IF the conditions are met (working for a Spanish company OR self employed in Spain OR proof of funds+private health insurance). TIE takes longer.

Unless I'm mistaken the thai consulate in Spain is one of the consulates that requires foreigners to get an NIE to use them for a visa to thailand

Look on the interweb how to apply for an NIE because I think you're not gonna be able to apply thru that consulate without one
