What should I do if I lost my passport in the US while trying to return to Thailand?

The most puzzling case of a lost passport/DTV. I've been Stateside for a couple of weeks for medical workups and at my clinic the other day apparently I lost my passport. When I got to my hotel it was not in the bag, and I immediately checked my AirTag and sure enough if was pinging at the clinic. I called the operations, let them know the location and that i'd be back as soon as the clinic opened the next day. (This was Wednesday). Early Thursday morning I received an email from site operations they'd be searching outside, then inside, then finally the ENTIRE clinic and there was no passport. I checked my airtag and there it was, pinging in the exact same location. As soon as I arrived I went right to the location and yup....no passport. The next few hours were searching, digging, looking under shrubs, tearing apart the waiting area I was at the prior day...no passport. But yet...there it was; updating regularly. I played the audio over and over again and it showed it was playing, but nothing being heard. SO...now the difficult decision. WHEN do I report it lost and go through the nauseating processing of getting everyting redone. How long should I wait? Will this thing just magically show up some day? The entire idea of an AirTag is so this doesn't happen, I've guided people to lost wallets a 1/2 world away before but a clinic 10 minutes from my motel and its just gone - like some force is playing tricks on me. Okay seriously...next steps? I want to keep searching as long as I can without waiting too long. Today (Friday) I went down there as soon as they closed and was digging on hands and kneeds exactly where it showed it was and nothing. Most bizarre thing ever. Thanks for advice folks.EDIT: Think there is some comfusion here, I'm a US CITIZEN and back in the UNITED STATES conducting business. I'm NOT in THAILAND currently.
Summary so far
A US citizen recently lost their passport while in the United States for medical work. They are trying to locate it using AirTag technology, which indicates the passport is still at the clinic. After searching extensively with no success, the individual is uncertain whether to report the passport as lost and start the replacement process. Community members offer advice on the urgency of reporting the loss, potential visa implications in Thailand, and technical issues related to GPS tracking.

Is it just showing the last place it pinged or is it saying it is actually pinging there now?

DTV_BegPecker it’s actively pinging. In fact I just looked and at last pinged eight minutes ago.

Try to improve the GPS triangulation on your phone if possible, although it won't affect the air tag it might give more accurate positionings.

thanks! I think the nerds in the Clinic IT office are having way too much fun with this which is fine. We tore the building apart again last night and I’m gonna tear up the. Parking area where “it is” today

Officially you need to have a passport and be able to show it on request of officials.

Your passport is your only proof that you are allowed to be in Thailand.

You decide how long you want to wait, be aware that it can take weeks or longer to get a new passport, being in overstay based on: I lost my passport and I can not leave is not a valid excuse. Get a new passport, once you have it, visit your local Immigration Office to get a new entry stamp and stamp with details of your visa

you did not give him useful information about what he should do at all. You just repeated what he already knew, and the hassles involved.
