My nightmare In Hong Kong.

I'm currently in HK went to immergration to obtain a 60 SETV.

first attempt lady said everything ok but photo not have white background go get new photo come back tomorrow.

Went and got new photo returned next day.

This time different lady.

Had paperwork showing.

Hotels booked and paid for untill 3rd March.

Flight booked back to UK on 28th April.

She looked at passport and said why you not get retirement visa in UK.

I explained I wanted to, but it had to be done by post and I wasn't sure if it would come back in time for my flight so I decided to go to the local Thai consulate and get a 60 SETV.

She then insisted that I show her UK bank statement for, I think 3 or 6 months. Can't remember to be honest because I was beginning to loose the plot.

I said I can show her 45,000 THB and ยฃ500 in cash would that be sufficient proof to show I can support myself.

She then said NO I want to see your UK bank statement.

As I was walking away she also said you travel a lot around Asia I think you are working in Thailand.

My personal situation I'm 68 retired on a bloody good company pension and a brilliant private pension and sadly my OAP from UK government.

I don't work I have no need to work ever again.

What the he'll is going on in the Thai immergration system?

Why should I have to get a retirement visa to travel in and out of the country. I spend about ยฃ20,000 every year in Thailand.

Think a big chunk if that will be spent else where next year

Sorry for the rant and rave. Only just starting to calm down ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user shared a frustrating experience while trying to obtain a 60-day Special Tourist Visa (SETV) for Thailand at the Thai Consulate in Hong Kong. After being told to return with a new photo, they faced additional requirements for a UK bank statement as proof of funds, which they found unreasonable given their financial situation as a retired individual. This led to complaints about the consulate's demands and the overall immigration system in Thailand, sparking further discussion among commenters about the need for better documentation and preparation when applying for visas.

and I think the O/P was mostly wanting to vent and that any constructive stuff has already been said.

A bit of research before you went there would probably have saved you some stress. It's been well documented in this group that if you're asked for proof of funds when buying a visa from a consulate or embassy in SE Asia that you would need to show those funds by way of a bank statement. Also, given that printing of online bank statements is fairly easy these days, rather than reacting with anger (which serves no purpose other than to cause you to not get what you want) it might have been possible to just go and print one.

As for 'what's going on with the immigration system' there are many people who are living in Thailand on visas that are primarily designed for tourists, some of whom are working illegally as well. Tourists are people who go somewhere on holiday, then go home. This doesn't seem to describe your lifestyle. You are retired with enough income to live in Thailand. That's why it was suggested that you get the appropriate visa for your circumstances. That would be the 'retirement visa'. Oddly enough, the staff in the Thai Consulate are not telepathic and aren't aware of your stated financial situation, or the fact that you don't need to work. That could be why they a) suggested the Non-Imm O-A type visa where you would provide proof of your earnings and work status and b) asked for a bank statement that, presumably, would also show them that you are not working in Thailand on a tourist visa.

Whilst you seemed to be angry at their requests, they're just doing their job. If you had provided them with what they asked for, you would have got the visa you wanted. You instead chose anger as a response and walked away with nothing.

Different kettle of fish in UK because we're citizens things are easy until you get to Thailand

I have heard getting g first Vietnam visa is easy but they don't like to renew does anyone know if that is true?
Ivan ************
I think he's talking about a visa for Vietnam, I have heard the same about there. Not a Thai Visa in Vietnam, but a visa to stay in Vietnam. Not really on topic for this group.
Robert *******
You can not renew a visa, you just visit a Thai Consulate and apply for a new visa.

Couldn't show her your online bank transactions?

Wow, sorry, ddn't mean to ruffle any feathers to the point of causing someone to "holler in caps" . Gomen.

I get my METV visas with printed online bank statements (in London)
Robert *******
NO, the girl at the desk check all the documents, put it aside and hand them later over to the person why actually decide and put the sticker in your passport. So cash, mobile phones, laptops or what ever with on-line transactions does not work to convince the second person that you have the funds needed. The only way is bank statements on paper, which goes with your application to the back office to get the visa.

Bank Statements have always been required and not cash. Next time be as prepared as you can, research and have as many documents and proofs that you can have to cover all bases.
Robert *******
First of all you visited a Thai Consulate, not Immigration. Second as the rule at every Thai Consulate if you have to show proof of funds it is always with bank statements, never with cash.

On a 30 days visa exemption entry you can extend for a further 30 days in country for 1,900 baht.

Thanks Robert.

I will carry on with doing 30day exemption this year and get my retirement visa from the UK.

My only concern is she really didn't like me traveling in and out of Thailand all the time. She accused me of working which surprised me.
Robert *******
Dennis Clutton No, Tourist visa's are not sold inside Thailand. You could apply at Immigration in Pattaya for the Non Immigrant O visa based on being over 50 years of age if you meet the financial requirements.

strange when i went to the Thai consulate in the UK to get my 60 day SETV I didn't have to show a bank statement or proof of funds to obtain it.

Maybe they seen I was in receipt of my government pension he knew I had sufficient funds.
