Just Got my Rejected DTV notice. 😔 Does anyone ever get a reason and where would that be given? USA citizen applying within China. Had all the forms perfectly as they wanted and meet requirements easily. Submitted with a 9 month cooking class soft power style. Now I have to decide where to go instead as this really screws my life plan. Was going to just work on my music full time. I can't believe some people like myself just get rejected for no apparent reason and others don't. Way too arbitrary and reasonless for $340 wasted dollars, and a lot more with partial cooking class refund, and a plane ticket I won't use. It's so great they make you buy that to apply. Was going to see if I like Thailand enough to do a retirement visa later -but not now. What's the better country to go to?
Summary so far
The post discusses the frustration of a USA citizen whose DTV visa application was rejected while applying from China. Despite meeting the requirements and submitting all necessary documents, the author feels that the rejection was arbitrary and expresses disappointment over lost time and money. The comments highlight others' experiences with similar visa issues, suggesting that there may be greater scrutiny on applications made from China and offering alternative options such as applying in Laos or Vietnam.

Hey, I'm currently working in China. I've done a lot of research, and it's easy to get tagged and rejected when applying in China. So I chose to go to Vietnam, and I've been waiting for two weeks now, but the system still shows "processing"...

I'm thinking China was the issue. If you want to re-apply, fly to another SEA country and apply. Since you said you live in China, I assume you can leave and re-enter without much hassle. If that's the case, leave all of your musical gear behind and go for an extended holiday to Vietnam or Laos and apply.

Why not to apply for a retirement visa now? It is not a lifelong decision yet most stable visa in Thailand as long as you wish to keep extending it. Why would you even bother with the DTV!
Dustin *********
Dustin *********
OP
Do you have this? I was considering this, but really didn't want to put 25k in a Thai bank at these volatile times and thought I would really test the waters and see if I wanted to go through with it. With some comparison it seemed that retirement visa is not very hassle free and requires even ore frequent checking in with immigration. I will be looking back into it as an option, but my trust is very low.

as long as you are not staying 90 days continuously in Thailand no reporting needed. If you do stay 90 days it took me 3.5 minutes yesterday to complete the task at the local IO. Same requirement for the DTV visa and any other visas except the LTR visa and the Privilege Pass.

I am leaning strongly toward doing this. Did you use an agent to help set it up and do within Thailand? Looks ike I pretty much need an agent to get the Thai bank account without credentials.

Thanks for the suggestion. I may, but it's a lot of time and expense for something that seems to be getting tightened and rejected. I've got some decent feedback and do think China is likely the issue. Music -People apparently don't know about 1 out of 100 musicians make money from it. Can you paint a picture in Thailand or is that unacceptable work too? It's funny really but I get it. No Hobbies allowed!!

I saw some smaller citys like chaing mai with the same rents as in chaing mai which is cheap, then the food is completely the changer you would have to cook to get the quality food you can order in Thailand for the same price, might be healthier to cook your own food too.

if you compare a small city in Spain with small city in Thailand, Thailand wins big. If you compare Bangkok with Madrid or Lisbon, Thailand wins big. Only if you compare living in an upper scale place in Bangkok with a small town in Spain and cooking at home you can have a similar budget. As an EU citizen and of 2026, I'd not move ANYWHERE in the EU to have a low budget lifestyle, absolutely ANYWHERE (unless you can live rent free).

Portugal has been at the top of my list. My husband got his DTV visa in Australia. Now I came to Vietnam to apply for mine, but let me tell you something. Vietnam is beautiful, I find cost of living a little more affordable than Thailand, food is great, lots of local people you can mix with, but also increasing expat communities.

So my advice is, come to Vietnam, try living here for a few months, see if this fits your retirement vision. And if you are still set in Thailand, apply again for the DTV from here. I have read multiple stories of people who were successful in their second or even third application just by trying a different embassy.

I have spent a decent amount of time in Vietnam and love it. Like the food better than Thai. It's just the where for me as a musician and not looking for the retired lifestyle and a good music scene and not solution year round? I made some pretty decent country comparison charts with Ai's help for all my priorities. Hard to make a long term plan when you have to do border visa runs that could fail. Will you stay in Vietnam? Or why are you set on Thailand -besides the hubby?

You both applied through my school. One of you was approved, while the other was not. This clearly shows that the final decision is made by the embassy, and each Thai embassy has its own level of scrutiny and assessment process.

However, Dustin, you should have contacted me first. I could have advised you on the best option, whether that was reapplying or requesting a refund.

Please let me know which option you would like to proceed with.

Everything about this is telling. You booked a 9-month cooking class to try to justify a 5-year visa. You called this your 'life plan' while banking on a soft-power loophole. Now you're calling the process 'arbitrary and reasonless' when it did exactly what it's supposed to do — catch people using a minimum course as a backdoor to a long-term visa. You're the textbook example of someone gaming the DTV, and you're shocked they didn't fall for it.
Kerry *******

@Bruno **********
Tbf, most places do not offer more than a 9-12 month course. If it was a requirement to book back to back training many of us would (And do anyway from the DTVers I know.)
Andrea *************
Andrea *************
@Bruno **********
You may not agree with the visa (it doesn’t really makes sense to me either), but it is the government that created the DTV Soft Power and set the requirements. So your feelings about people being worthy or not are irrelevant.

Doing a 9 month course and applying for a 5 year visa is not a “loophole”, it is how they design it.
Bruno ***********
Bruno ***********
@Andrea ************
If you actually follow the DTV trend on this group, you'd see that many people have abused the system, most of them through the soft-power route. The Foreign Ministry likely designed this visa too fast, without input from immigration police — which reportedly upset them, and they spoke about it in the Thai news. Then, month after month, they noticed people gaming the system: some with a few months of a course, some with just three dentist appointments. So it's no surprise they're now making this visa much harder to get.
@Dustin ********
it's not about you, dude. You're probably a nice guy, but like a lot of foreigners, you seem to feel 'entitled' — like you're owed this. Embassy officials issue visas at their own discretion. They choose who they want to let in and who they don't. In your case, they decided you didn't meet the criteria. You're free to apply through a different embassy and see if another officer sees it differently. Also, Thailand will be just fine with or without your money. I've heard this kind of colonial mindset a thousand times, again, not aimed at you personally, but it's a mindset a lot of people should leave behind if they ever get the chance to live in Thailand.
Dustin *********
Dustin *********
OP
@Bruno **********
Man, what the hell?! What a considerate person you are. I found out what visa's are available and what is required to get them. How is meeting requirement criteria perfectly "gaming the system"? They are the ones who set the requirements. The requirements if met should allow you to get the visa. Simple. It's no backdoor -it's their design not mine. So here you are sharing your opinion but it is just that. If it is an opinion shared by Thai immigration how was I supposed to know that? There was no reason given and people get accepted for this commonly so it is very reasonable to apply using it. I bought into what they offered and a cooking school offered. I am the one getting scammed. I would be spending many tens of thousands over the years -bringing all that funding into the country. How awful and sneaky of me to think I could get away with that.

The Thai Language and Culture school that I applied through told me that certain local embassies were to be avoided. I have cut and pasted from their first email exactly what they said:

--

Due to the most recent updates, approval rates for the Soft Power (DTV) visa at Thai embassies in the countries listed below are currently extremely low.

- SPAIN

- GERMANY

- NIGERIA

- JAPAN

- CHINA

- USA

- SINGAPORE

For this reason, if you are planning to apply through one of these Thai embassies, we regret to inform you that we are unable to accept your enrollment at this time.

Kindly let us know which country you plan to apply for the visa from. We will check the latest situation and update you before you proceed with the payment.

If you have any questions or need help during the process, please feel free to contact us anytime we’re happy to assist you.

We look forward to welcoming you to study and experience Thai culture with us here in Chiang Mai!

In a later email, they specifically advised me to go to Laos.

Yes, I was successful. I paid my 10K baht on a Friday morning and received my acceptance the next Friday. The Thai embassy in Vientiane processes a lot of DTVs. They have a reputation for issuing fewer rejections than other embassies, and for that reason it is very popular.

if you don’t know what my intent was, why comment something with not relation to the thread at all. The intent is clear, the author should stop complaining, state what he uploaded, get advise from the group and stop complaining and re-apply if it was such a requirement he had to have a DTV. You have no point other than hurt feelings between you and the author. I don’t need an AI system to tell me if I said something in some way you feel or not. I know exactly what I said and totally stand by it. Rude is thinking you’re entitled to something just because it’s available.

I’ve read some of your posts and the Authors and both of you seem the same that the world owes you approval because you paid some money for the visa in its lowest form under soft power. Considering I applied and was approved in 7 days without help including prior to joining this group (which I only joined to help others) means I must have done something right. 🙏🏼 it’s crazy that you believe the world should be empathetic to this situation, I’m empathetic to people that require it not people applying for a visa with an entitled attitude. I totally understand being annoyed at losing money, had my fair share of losses over the years. You are advised on application that if you are rejected the visa fee is non-refundable. They don’t provide feedback, they list the exact documents you need, if further information is required they request it. It’s down to you as the applicant to provide sufficient information and evidence to support the application. How have you been ripped off? My take on this group is for helping, you haven’t asked for any tangible help. Make a list of what you submitted and what the additional information was and let the group help. If you want to stay sulking go ahead it’s not going to get your visa approved, it’s only wasted energy. Hopefully you’ll learn this when you grow up. 🙏🏼 what’s not confusing? Ok don’t let the group know, why would I care. You very clearly don’t meet the visa criteria as you were declined. I don’t care about what you have to do in china, I’m trying to help you with your DTV. But I have no information to go off. What solutions are you looking for as you didn’t ask for any in this original post? Wishing bad karma on someone because they are trying to convince you to stop complaining and get back up and reapply for the visa you want is crazy. Good luck on your journey.

Nothing in life is guaranteed and the quicker that’s realised the less hurt people will feel. I'm no expert, but it seems Thai Immigration is going through a wicked spell right now, cracking down on everything and everyone. I got hassled big time re-entering the country last month on an ED Plus yearly visa for a master's degree at MFU. You would think that would be a pretty painless visa to be on, so long as you are legitimately studying and spending the money to do it. However, over the five years I've been here on various visas, I've found there are zero guarantees. It feels like you're treated worse the longer you stay, regardless of how law-abiding of a resident you are.

not sure what you are trying to say in regards to drinking beer all day. The response doesn’t make full sense. Maybe your lack of clarity is why you were rejected. specifically for this Thai online portal and all the docs should be the Asian format yes? What about if a bank statement of mine is the other way though

Then you will be rejected and will wonder why for the next 5 years .
Dustin *********
Dustin *********
OP
You are right -it's a possibility, but wouldn't it be so easy to let you know.... And give some human respect.
Khun *********
Khun *********
They are only familiar with this in the country where it applies. That’s why when your formatting is US it’s better to apply in the US. Because they are familiar with it there. I guarantee that in China or Laos Thai embassy some people are not familiar with it AT ALL. So when you don’t understand the statement formatting , with thousands of application files to work on, tentation is to reject it . It’s human . With no explanation to give whatsoever.

1) statements dates don’t seem to match the requirements

2) application rejected

3) NEXT .
Dustin *********
Dustin *********
OP
@Khun ********
You can't change your bank statement formatting. They have to be familiar with this.

yo yall need to learn how to book dummy air plane tickets i been doing it for years
Sasha *********
Sasha *********
i’m been doing it for 20yrs you do what you need to do and i do what i need to do. and MR. are you going to refund anyone their money? the government in every single country in the world themselves are the most corrupted people that defraud anyone surely your not talking to me when i have NEVER had a incident and i work for the government and was a soldiers so again if you don’t and haven’t lived the life i have stop trying to talk about a government or embassy that don’t and won’t care about YOUR bank account or family if you lack resources. live YOUR life as you think you need to
Dustin *********
Dustin *********
OP
@Sasha ********
I knew about this but as I understood the process was going to take too long to hold the dummy ticket for. Possibly 2-3 months in China. It went way faster so I probably could have used. And yeah, I got mixed info too as to whether it would work or get me a rejection so i didn't want that risk.
Luit *****************
Luit *****************
@Dustin ********
A better way is just buy fully refundable tickets, then you don't loose money when you need to cancel when you don't get approved.
Michael ********
Michael ********
@Sasha ********
what do you mean
Jon **********
Jon **********
@Michael *******
There are sites that sell ”dummy tickets”. They are verifiable on the the airlines websites for a few weeks or so. I have used it multiple times myself.
Michael ********

pnr is public 😂

Jon **********

Of course it is, it's a real PNR that can be verified on the airlines website.

oh i know and their are also agencies that can help you once your in thaialnd. i mean i wouldn’t do that though. that’s really fraud cause i mean how but i understand everything is a business
Greg ***********
Greg ***********
@Sasha ********
when the Thai embassy sees a dummy ticket (which you will have to upload!) they will immediatley cancel your application. Thai Embassies and Immigration can't be fooled with onwardtickets. For them it is an attempt to commit fraud
Michael *************
Michael *************
@Greg **********
Question is how does the Thai embassy know if you book a dummy ticket? They are not checking your credit card… or the airlines… every one talks about fraud… if you book a ticket and don’t use the ticket…isn’t that fraud if you got your DTV based on a paid airline ticket? Just book a refundable ticket so that if you can not get the visa, you can cancel.
Laurie ********
Laurie ********
@Greg **********
so they can tell if it’s an onward ticket “reservation”?
Jon **********
Jon **********
@Greg **********
This isn’t correct. The booking PNR is verifiable on the airlines website if you use a reputable page for your dummy ticket. I have used it myself and we also used it for my gfs ticket for Schengen visa.
Sasha *********
Sasha *********

so what you do is just go on cheaptickets.com. why because that is the only website i know that you can cancel a ticket within 24hours and get your money back. So buy any cheap ticket to whatever destination your going to the whole goal is you need the itinerary but make sure it says you can cancel free within 24hrs for your money back. You still have to have the funds in your account. Make sure it is a roundtrip tickets as well When they send the flight itinerary to your email then ya BOOM! cancel the flight. i first learnt how to do this when i was married to a someone who lived in the bahamas. You can also just do that if you want to go to a country that you want to send an extended time in and unsure of what date you wanna leave. There is no airline in the world can confirm if that flight will actually leave out that day and things always change on the personal side of your life. So you’re not lying or defrauding anyone. You basically don’t want to waste your money cause you don’t know if you going to be approved or not. That is an estimated date that you are expecting to travel. 😉
Luit *****************
Luit *****************
@Dany *******
Because of these tricks more and more embassies now want tickets. Onwardtickets are mostly meant for cases where you need proof immediately, and not for weeks.

Somes of those sites offer longer times validity at higher cost.

That is logical because they need to invest their money for a longer time.
Dany ********
Dany ********
@Luit ****************
you could use any onwardticket website as they are especially for visa applications. same for schengen visa, etc… embassies want to see a travel itinerary rather than a fully paid ticket. onward tickets are perfectly fine and even represent a real booking with a real ticket number.
Luit *****************
Luit *****************
@Sasha ********
Sending travel information as proof which you already cancelledis not lying or defrauding anyone?

Do you believe yourself?

This kind of behaviour is the reason some embassies want to see tickets, and not only flight reservation anymore.

Unfortunately, you should have gone in with a business.

A 9mo cooking class for a 5yr visa? Nope.

Sucks but you should try again with corporate paperwork.

strange comment when if you search history on here half approved applications are approved for cooking , and even some absurd ones for dental 🤣 his denial will be in his application for sure or China being the location as being a US citizen

I see more business applications getting denied than soft over extensive paperwork they now request to verify its a legit company for remote work.

CopperElk5611 Honestly, China just sucks and nothing works here. Even though it's possible to apply here they didn't include English requesting secondary docs - suggesting they don't speak English. I did everything right. I combed it a million times before submitting as well as using multiple Ai's. Its not rocket science.

Nought*******

@Paul *******
well you would imagine that a new company planning to trade 5 years and a 5 year cooking course would be the answer.

But this visa and logic doesn't work.

A 6 month old company which doesn't trade after the visa and a 12 month, 9 month or even 6 month boxing or cooking course is fine 🤣

It's a terrible system.

There were no errors. I am super meticulous, My past job required it to the extreme and everything was quite clear. But... how can you know if they don't even have the courtesy of letting you know the issue for $340? It really suggests it's just a racket for money and there is no easily statable reason. Yeah, happy to get some cooking skills but don't need to be a master chef. 😄
Paul ********
Paul ********
Of course it works. DVT is a tourist visa and people living there are spending their money.

Who wants a 5 year cooking course? People who get rejected usually because of their own error(s).
