Can US citizen apply One Year Multiple Entry Thai Visa in any SE Asia country, such as Kuala Lumpur Royal Thai Embassy? If NO, what is the longest Thai visa US passport holder can get outside of US? (I don't need work inside Thailand)

TLDR : Answer Summary
A US citizen can apply for a One Year Multiple Entry Thai Visa at a Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate outside of the USA, including in Southeast Asian countries like Malaysia. However, if applying from outside the US, it is important to confirm with the specific embassy about acceptance and requirements. The longest visa duration available outside of the US varies; typically, the Non-O or Non-X visa can be applied for with specific conditions, like retirement or education, upon entering Thailand on a visa exemption.
NON-O RETIREMENT VISA RESOURCES / SERVICES
  • Go to the Retirement Visa Section for information on requirements, including age restrictions, financial requirements, and necessary documentation.
  • For immediate assistance, contact Thai Visa Centre directly via LINE at @ThaiVisaCentre or Email them.
  • Explore recent discussions by using the Non-O Retirement Visa tag in the search box at the top of the page.

how come you know all those things about Thailand visa ? ๐Ÿ˜€ You certainly have very high credibility in my book!

@Patrick *****
On an O-X visa you HAVE to bank the money in a thai bank.

@Patrick *****
As it is mentioned on the website of the Thai Embassy in Washington: 4. A copy of bank statement (from Thailand financial institutes only)

from my reading, you only need provide financial proof from USA bank(s), if you apply O-A visa in USA. But you do need provide financial proof from Thailand bank(s) if you apply O-X visa, no matter where you apply that from. Is my understanding correct?

Changed around Aug 2016.

@Tod ********
is thus a recent change? It's been a while but I got one year multi entry B and O from the honorary in Dallas. I know others did maybe 2 years ago.

@Phil ****
nope, you can't use Coral Gables for anything other than MAYBE a 90 day single entry Non-O visa (if they can even issue that) or a tourist visa. They can't issue multi-entry visas.

There is no 5 year retirement visa :/ It's actually a 10 year Non-Immigrant Type O-X visa. I have only seen people get them from the thai consulates in their country BEFORE they come here. I have never seen one issued inside the country (not that it couldn't be, but I've never seen it.

I would say it's not risky at all to apply by mail for either the O-A or the O-X. Read the requirements, MEET the requirements follow the procedure to mail it in and to get your passport back and you'd be fine. The thai consulate in Washington DC is pretty easy to deal with and I know people who use them routinely for visas to thailand by mail.

@Tod ********
doing by mail could be risky because I would really have to make sure there are no errors. When Iโ€™m in Thailand could I change it to a 5 year retirement visa? Are there any advantages to changing it? I live in Florida can the embassy in Miami do it? Thanks ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿผ

@Phil ****
, it is NOT troublesome to get the visa in the US because ALL those consulates do visas by mail too.

I think you're way better off getting a year-long, multi-entry Non-Immigrant Type O-A (Long Stay) visa from one of the thai consulates in the USA before you wash up here than trying to get a 90 day Non-O visa, then a yearly extension of stay inside the country from the immigration office. Plus you can't even compare the Non-O-A visa to a yearly extension in terns of value. The O-A is the way to go definitely.
Tod *********
As
@Rob***
mentioned there are FOUR thai consulates in the USA that can issue year-long, multi-entry Non-Immigrant Type visas (O, B, ED, O-A, O-X etc)

Those are Chicago, Los Angeles, New York and Washington DC.

NONE of the other honorary consulates can issue them any more.
Philip *********
Also LA and Chicago
Robert *******
@David ***********
But they don't provide the Non Immigrant O-A visa.
David ************
Phil there are also quite a few Honorary Consulates in the US that process visas.
Robert *******
Can be obtained in Washington, New York, Los Angeles or Chicago.

Are you in the US? If so mail your O-A application to Thai Embassy along with required documents and passport. Get one year O-A multi entry visa. Tod Daniels is the expert. Possibly he can post the list of required items . Which is the closest Thai Embassy to you ? WashDC or NYC or ???
James ********
I'm confused...your prior questions in this forum:

USA citizen living in Thailand with a 10โ€™year retirement visa. How do I renew my USA passport? Mail , USA embassy, go back to USA ?
Robert *******
And on what basis would you apply for this one year Multiple Entry Visa for Thailand?

@Tod ********
Both my colleague, who is thinking of making the move with his wife, and I agree with you, O-A visa is the best option and then we can do from there.

@Patrick *****
I would still weigh in and say that getting a year-long, multi-entry Non-Immigrant Type O-A (Long Stay) visa from one of the thai consulates in the USA that issues that visa will be the easiest and most trouble free visa to have once you come here.

@James *******
Yes, you are absolutely right! I will move my address to my friend's house and just like I still live in the states. besides I also have to file US tax return every year.

@Patrick *****
Good luck!
Robert *******
You're welcome.

@Patrick *****
be very careful about selling everything and leaving the US until you have lived in Thailand for a year to be certain of your decision. Keep your US bank accounts and credit cards with US address. If banks know you are in residence outside of the US they may cancel the accounts.

@Robert ******
That is my current plan. Thanks for your great advice.
Robert *******
In that first year you can decide what to do, Thai Elite visa for 5, 10 or 20 years or apply every year for new Extension of Stay.
Robert *******
Go travel around Asia, get a Tourist visa in the country where you are before you plan to settle in Thailand, Convert in country to the Non Immigrant O visa, get the Extension and your sorted for 1 year.

@Robert ******
To be honest with you, sometime, I just felt like F**k it, I just apply for 20 elite visa for 1 million Baht, but that is such a long commitment, I don't know how I feel living in Thailand long term.
Patrick ******
ORIGINAL POSTER
Good to know, but I can apply O visa, right?
Robert *******
NO, you can NOT get the Non Immigrant O-A visa outside the USA. Best option for you is to apply for this Visa BEFORE you make your way to Thailand.

My situation is that I want to sell everything I own in USA and travel in Asia for a year or so then settle down in Thailand, I don't want to come back to USA just for a long term stay. So it seems like I can do that while I am in SE Asia. I understand all the requirements of O-A visa, just didn't know I can get that outside of USA as a USA passport holder. Thanks for in information
Robert *******
Or you can apply for this Visa inside Thailand at an Immigration Office, you will get 90 days of stay, and after 60 days you apply for 1 year Extension of Stay and you can also apply for the multiple re-entry permit to travel and keep this Extension of Stay alive.
Robert *******
It is called the Non Immigrant O Visa based on over 50 years of age (called by many retirement visa) Just visit the websites of the Thai Embassies or Consulates in SE Asia to see their specific requirements.
Patrick ******
