What should expats know about the DTV visa process and entry at Bangkok immigration?

I landed in Bangkok (BKK) last night after a 4-day trip to Taiwan. At immigration, the officer called another IO to escort me to a separate room, where I waited for around 30 minutes.

After that, an officer called me over and asked if I had ever used the VIP lane/Fast Track service before. (I had used it once on my first DTV entry last year through an agent.)

I told him that I hadn’t used it this time because I didn’t think I needed it since I have a DTV visa. This was my third entry, and I also didn’t use it on my second entry.

He simply said, “You did the right thing. You don’t need to use that anymore since you have a visa, and immigration officers will no longer provide that service.”

They didn’t ask me anything about my job, my income, or the type of DTV I have. I think the only issue was that I had used the VIP line service once before, and that was it.

After that, they stamped me for 180 days and let me go. That was the entire process.

So, based on my experience, there’s no need to worry too much about some of the scary posts in this group. Of course, everyone’s situation is different, but in my case everything went smoothly, and the only thing they seemed concerned about was my previous use of the Fast Track service.
Answer summary
The poster shares their smooth experience at Bangkok's immigration upon their third entry with a DTV visa. They were briefly held for questioning regarding previous use of the Fast Track service but were ultimately stamped in for 180 days without issues related to their job or income. They emphasize that concerns posted by others may not always reflect one's own experience, advocating that if you hold a visa, the entry process is generally straightforward.

Very easy to renew and have it sent to any British embassy anywhere in the world.

from what I read the embassy in Bangkok doesn’t deal with it anymore, but I think I’m sorted now

ThrillingPomelo6053 they won’t deal with it, but they will receive it and issue to you when you arrive. Tbh BKK, embassy is ok but their rules are strict and not overly helpful.

Very easy from VFS. No photos needed signing and there are places doing photocopying and photographs on site if you need anything done. The staff are very helpful they email to let you it has arrived in the UK and email you when it is ready for collection. A very easy process.

Denise Jamieson when you applied online with GOV UK was there an option where you choose which VFS centre you wanted?

I have renewed mine and my sons. Used agency for me quite painless apart from 10k. I did it for my son and straight forward but by the time you travel there and back twice and waited to submit it plus paid to copy every page maybe 12k isn’t so bad. It takes about 3 weeks to get it back.

If you're planning to renew it when you get back to the UK, it's all done online now. It took exactly 9 days from the time I applied until the new passport was delivered. There were no forms to print out.

Chris Blunt I will do it in Bangkok when I get back

ThrillingPomelo6053 It's still done online. I guess you can pay an agent, but there's no need to waste money on that when it's easy to do it yourself.

I renewed my UK passport last year via an agency after getting photos signed by an authorised UK citizen living here, filled in all the paperwork and handed it to the agency. I left my old passport with them and was told I could retrieve it any time should it be needed. I also paid some extra when the new passport arrived 3 weeks later so the visa etc could all be transferred. Very straightforward.

Two friends renewed recently. They both did the application themselves. You make an appointment to go to VFS to hand in the application and answer any questions. Neither was very long in their appointment. You need a credit card for payment as it is pre-authorised and then taken when the application is being processed.

You then wait for a message saying the new passport is ready to be collected. You have, I think, 2 or 3 weeks to collect it. No appointment needed just turn up after 2pm.

In each case they got the message about 3 weeks after handing in the application.
