What should I expect during immigration process at Bangkok with a DTV visa?

I landed in Bangkok (BKK) last night after a 4-day trip to Taiwan. At immigration, the officer called another IO to escort me to a separate room, where I waited for around 30 minutes.

After that, an officer called me over and asked if I had ever used the VIP lane/Fast Track service before. (I had used it once on my first DTV entry last year through an agent.)

I told him that I hadn’t used it this time because I didn’t think I needed it since I have a DTV visa. This was my third entry, and I also didn’t use it on my second entry.

He simply said, “You did the right thing. You don’t need to use that anymore since you have a visa, and immigration officers will no longer provide that service.”

They didn’t ask me anything about my job, my income, or the type of DTV I have. I think the only issue was that I had used the VIP line service once before, and that was it.

After that, they stamped me for 180 days and let me go. That was the entire process.

So, based on my experience, there’s no need to worry too much about some of the scary posts in this group. Of course, everyone’s situation is different, but in my case everything went smoothly, and the only thing they seemed concerned about was my previous use of the Fast Track service.
Answer summary
The author shared their experience entering Bangkok with a DTV visa, noting the process at immigration was smooth despite initial escorting to a separate room. The officer mentioned that since they hold a visa, there is no longer a need to use the VIP lane service. The author received a 180-day stamp and did not face questioning about income or job status. Commenters discussed related visa types, processes, and the upcoming changes to visa exemptions, emphasizing the importance of understanding personal circumstances regarding visa options.

Mind has already been made up.

It is just going through the approval process.

Also the 60 day expansion was never intended to be permanent.

exactly how many days can we stay in Thailand?
THAI ******************************
THAI ******************************
@Ray *****
The correct question is how many days do you wish to stay in Thailand, and then making a plan around that.

Exempt entry is not a reliable long term visa (similar to many other countries).

It is intended to make short term arrivals easier, and even allows for a longer term stay via an extension. It's not meant to be used back to back over and over.

In the past immigration was lenient on this type of activity but long term stay has never been the intention of the visa exemption.

Will the 30 day free entry plus another 30 day exemption given enough time to apply for the retirement visa in country? Or is there an alternative?

@everyone A lot of people have asked us to post about the upcoming change from 60-day visa-exempt entry back to 30 days.

If you are unsure whether it is already in effect or not, this one-minute video should help clarify the current situation.

These upcoming changes apply to everyone who wishes to use exempt entry.

For some it's a simple shortening of visa exemption, for others they may no longer even be able to qualify for a visa exemption.

@Arron ********
What do you mean?

The group of people who would be seriously affected by this change is actually quite small.

More than 99% of visa-exempt entries are for stays of less than 14 days, and travelers still have the option to apply for a 30-day extension inside Thailand.

For those who genuinely want to stay the full 90 days, they can simply apply through the official government portal for a 60-day tourist eVisa before arriving.

And for anyone looking to stay longer than a year, Thailand still has plenty of long-term visa options available. If anything, Thailand has never had this many options for people who want to stay long term.

if previous governments had taken this approach it would of still been 8 days. This is what it was when I first visited Thailand. Anything longer than an 8 day stay needed a tourist visa which was 30 days, extendable for a further 15 days at immigration.

Kevin Dunne You can get a marriage visa to give you 90 days on arrival then get the 12 month extension (requires 400k seasoned in a Thai bank account) for the 12 month extension. Unfortunately your stay is over 5 moths which means after getting your 90 days on arrival you cannot take the 60 day Visit Thai Fanily extension. Going beyond 90 days and covering your trip of over 5 months will become more difficult if/when visa exempt reverts to 30 days as this only gives you 60 on top of your 90 days with an extension. Were you married in Thailand or abroad because if not in Thailand then you need to get your foreign marriage verified by your Thai Embassy to make things easier for you when dealing with Immigration while in Thailand?

It's just a slow process.

It will eventually revert to 30 days. Luckily there is still a 60 day TR option via the evisa website for most.

More than 99% of exempt entry arrivals stay less than 30 days anyways so this does not impact the majority so it's most likely low priority.

The change from the start was temporary.

If you want to stay in Thailand long term there are plenty of options available.

If short term there's the TR visa which is quite simple to apply for.

It may or may not come into effect , the Government can change it's mind . And i am not sure on whether or not His Majesty the King must sign off on it ? So if that is so and he does not sign off on it , that would make the "rule" ineffective .

Dca Dca maybe you should actually read the Constitution of Thailand and understand that any law passed by the legislature has to be signed off by the King or deemed to have been signed by the King before it is gazetted into law. 1

Chapter One

Legislative Process in Thailand: A Statistical Overview

Shinya Imaizumi

Kritchapol Comsatyadham**

The aim of this chapter is to provide a statistical overview of legislative process

in Thailand. It will start from a brief consideration of the forms of Thai legislation, as

well as the features of Thai parliament system. Then, it overviews how the number of

legislation has changed since Thailand established the parliamentary in 1932.

I. Forms of Legislation in Thailand

Despite the frequent constitutional changes, the fundamental framework for the

legislative power remains unchanged. Section 3 of the 2007 Constitution provides that

“[t]he sovereign power belongs to the Thai people. The King as Head of the State shall

exercise such power through the National Assembly, the Cabinet and the Courts in

accordance with the provisions of this Constitution.”1

Any statute that is enacted by the National Assembly takes a form of “an Act”

(phrarachabanyat). A bill of an Act or Organic Act may be enacted as law “only by and

with the advice and consent of the National Assembly and, when signed or deemed to

have been signed by the King under this Constitution”, then be promulgated in the

Government Gazette (s. 90).2

Organic Act

An Organic Act is one example of the legislative reform under the political

reform movement in the 1990s. The concept of organic act was introduced into Thai law

Steven Scott The Head of State, as Sovereign Monarch of Thailand does NOT have anything to do with these 3 draft Ministry of Interior Notices (Announcements) on changing the free Visa Exemption scheme for Tourists or Visa on Arrival scheme being published in the Royal Gazette

Please kindly do not involve Thailand's Head of State when there is nothing involved with these Ministry of Interior Announcements, past or present

@Steven ******
Yes if it is not signed off then it would never come into effect.

But we still get messages every day asking about it because they see news posts saying it has already happened.

It could take one day, or it could take one year. There are most likely other factors that have pushed this change further down the priority list as well (but the current intent is quite clear).

The main thing tourists should know is that they can still qualify for a 30-day extension. And if they know they need to stay longer than 60 days, the tourist visa is still a very good option.
