TLDR : Answer Summary
To qualify for a 12-month extension on a Non-O immigrant visa for retirement in Thailand, you need to provide proof of funds. This can be either showing a monthly income of at least 65,000 Baht from an overseas source or having 800,000 Baht transferred from an overseas source into your Thai bank account in your name. Simply submitting bank statements is not sufficient; additional documentation may also be necessary.

You need to show bt65,000+ a month coming from an overseas source, or bt800,000+ coming from an overseas source into your Thai bank account in your name only. Being that you are restricted from working under a retirement visa, coming in as wages will probably get it refused.

I keep hearing about the 2 you mentioned, but I was told there is one more where you don't need to show either. My language school said there is a 3rd option. You pay a little more, but don't need to put money in Thailand bank. True or should I be concerned?

i also heard that there was a 3rd option were you have to show assets but not in a Thai bank. But not sure of the details. Would suggest you bring a Thai speaker to immigration with you and ask them. They would know.

Yeah, Kool Breeze has always given great knowledge on other things, but I am pretty sure that my language school would not risk getting in trouble quoting me a third option..

you seem to think they would get in trouble, when they could be getting a kickback.

no sir.. i was very specific with them about the validity of the visa. and they 100 percent said it was a real 1 year visa that is stamped at immigration. I don't think that they would get in trouble. All i care about is the ability to stay in Thailand for another year or 2 without having to open a thai bank account. I am not trying to dance around the system that you are referring to, but if a reputable school tells me there is a visa that includes a stamp, well I am inclined to believe them.

legally you must meet the financial requirement. There are some basic loanshark visa agents that sell you use of a bank account to meet the financial obligations, but they are not legal, with constant efforts made to end them. It is why you must keep bt400,000 in your account for the whole year now, of the bt800,000, to try and end these agents, as the thinking was they would loose to much money, or have to charge too much if bt400,000 was left in the account all year. They will eventually find some other way to stop that loophole.

I wonder why a language school would risk losing its credibility over saying there is 3 options. I have plenty of money but I do not want to open a Thai bank account if I don't have to. My money makes far more in my brokerage account. I'll have to drill them a little more tomorrow. They did say it was a real visa with stamp.

for a retirement visa you must have the money in a Thai bank account, or be receiving the monthly amount into a Thai bank account every month, from an overseas source. You can not get a one year retirement extension inside Thailand without a Thai bank account.

i am not sure why they are telling me there is a option for 1 year.. i will ask them tomorrow and let you know what they say

they need to stop the immigration officers taking tea money under the table also ,it's all corrupt !!!

Andy Gatt. If you meet the requirements there's nothing to pay. I've done four extensions in country, never paid a cent to an agent or an immigration officer

I've never paid them it's the agency people I'm on about ,I have all the requirements needed ,only ask about bank letter in my post if needed or not ?

Andy Gatt. If using 800k method, one letter from your bank confirming the account. If using 65k/month method you need same letter, plus twelve months of statements showing all the 12 monthly transfers.

I was hoping to hear from someone like you! I don’t have the 800k baht but as a former public servant, I have a lifetime pension that’s in multiples of the 65k requirement. But how do I show 12 months of that coming into a Thai bank account when I can’t even open one till I get there. Does that mean someone like me will be unable to get the retirement visa applying from Australia??
Bobby ********
Leonard Leerdam. You can get the OA visa in Aus, which means showing money in Aus bank account or super fund. The OA is valid a year. As soon as you arrive in Thailand open a bank account and start the 65k/month regime. By the time the OA needs extending you should have 12 monthly payments ready to support application for extension.
