Renewing Driving License: At the DLT I wanted to use my Pink ID, which has my name in Thai, for proof of residency. As my current license has my name in English they require a form, that translates to Personal Certificate, from my local Amphur. There I was told that they don’t use that form anymore though other Amphurs still do. They sent me to our Tessaban where I filled out a form requesting services. At their suggestion I wrote that I need, what translates to, an Address Certificate. They said they’ll call me next week. Anyone else have a similar experience?
Answer summary
The post discusses the complications faced by an expat trying to renew their driving license in Thailand using their Pink ID for proof of residency. The author was informed that since their current license displays their name in English, they required a 'Personal Certificate' from their local Amphur, which they learned is no longer in use at their office. They were redirected to their Tessaban to request an 'Address Certificate' and mentioned that an expected follow-up would occur the following week. The comments reveal varied experiences related to overstaying, visa validity, and interactions with immigration, illustrating the challenges expats face with Thai regulations.

My 2 cents. The DTV is a tourist visa, it wasn't meant to be a permanent residency visa. IE. Stay for 180 days, do a border run, stay for 180 days, do a border run, stay for 180 days.. Doing border runs are out of favour for other visas, the same apparently goes for DTVs. I personally always, go back to the USA for 2-3 months, before returning to Thailand. 2 years into using my DTV, I've never been questioned, yet.

Overstaying is not a good idea. To be honest I think you dodged a bullet being able to get back into Thailand.

Wow you people on here are very touchy about overstay. I’ve overstayed loads of times just pay the fine and get stamped in fine next time 😆🤣

Somsak Saetang You won't be so lucky next time. They're heavily cracking down on overstayers.

Somsak Saetang By overstaying, you're demonstrating the inability to follow the rules. It's a red flag, even if you're paying the fine.

I was luckier. I wasn’t taken anywhere but another counter where the senior officer stamped my passport without another question. They’ve overdone it. Almost indiscriminately. I am not visiting Thailand again

The reason they brought you to the room is cause you overstayed the first time. Even though you think it’s a small thing it reflects your visa. And if they ask about condo or hotel, you simply show you your. TM 30 which is your responsibility to keep up.

Bill Cleaver nope. I’d never overstayed. They flagged me

Overstay and arriving from Cambodia will get you extra attention
RadiantC********

@Biff ******
True, but overstaying is the more important factor. When combined with a return from Cambodia and the consistent 180 day stays, it rings alarm bells that wouldn't necessarily cause any issues on their own.
Biff *******

RadiantCamel1017 consistent stays during the permitted stay for the visa raises absolutely no bells whatsoever.

The only time I ever overstayed was because I didn’t realise leaving was based on your flight time not the time you get stamped out. So I overstayed because my flight was just after midnight.
Pete *******

false, your flight time is irrelevant, the only thing that matters is the time you are stamped out by Immigration.

this is untrue I have left on the last day where my flight actually leaves one day over and I just go through immigration before midnight and it always is stamped out for the day that I leave on not the day of the flight

I think is about your overstay .

I do like you , I stay my whole 180 days , leave around 5 days before it ends . Stay 1 or 2 weeks out and come back. Doing it for 2 years already.

I just came back 3 days ago , and it took longer this time at immigration . Coz I went to Korea for 2 weeks . My problem was , I have 2 passports , the one with the DTV and the other . The other does not need any kind of visa or online visa to Korea . So I bought my tickets on the other one , left Thailand got the stamp out , but had a second immigration to check the tickets . I gave my DTV passport didn’t know she wanted the tickets this time . So she asked for the ticked , so passport didn’t match gave the other passport . She complained .

Left bye bye .

On the way back they held me longer at the cue because of it . When the guy stamped me he said :

Next time you need to leave Thailand using the nationality with the DTV , not the other nationality.

I think they track record of what happen when u leave, coz how would he know about this 2 passaporte confusion heheheh
RadiantC********

Correct. I think the overstay is the main reason for him being pulled aside.

RadiantC********

CoolRama Not on its own. There are still flights between the two countries and while there continue to be issues, the drama of last year has greatly subsided, particularly following news stories of harassment at the airport.

His overstay is the main issue followed by his consistent 180 day stays. However, on its own, consistent 180 day stays are not necessarily a red flag either.

not have many choice .. there is a big gap between dtv and elite / ltr.. ( when < 50 yo ). A "light elite dtv" at 99k baht/year ( or less :) ) is missing.

Not about over stay.

you stayed in Thailand all the time and not moving around. They suspended if you might be working illegally in Thailand.

I traveled 5 months to another country and still was asked when I came back. Because I had stayed all the time in Thai before I traveled

They allowed me to go when I told them that I have my condo

yeah this is not true. I came November 2024 on tourist visa , did 60 days then 30 day ext. I left for 1 day and came back for another 60 days then 30 day extension.

I then left for 6 weeks and got my Dtv in July 2025. I came back 6 months went Vietnam for few days came back 6 months went Vietnam again came back again last week got fresh 6 months. I work remotely I have a 5 year valid working Dtv visa. Follow the rules and there’s no issues.

If you got a digital nomad dtv you can work as long as you want. That has nothing to do with it. Soft power gets alot of questions

Why you guys overstaying isn't 180 days enough, a border jump to Malaysia or Laos and get another 180 days, cases like these increase scrutiny for other DTV holders as well

There is no need to stay 180 days, you can also leave long before day 180.
