TLDR : Answer Summary
Renewing a U.S. passport in Thailand can be done through the U.S. Embassy in Bangkok or the Consulate General in Chiang Mai. The process typically takes 2-8 weeks depending on the method used (in-person drop-off, online renewal, or mail-in). The standard fee for renewal is $130 USD, with potential additional costs for return shipping. For those eligible to use Form DS-82, most can renew by mail without needing to appear in person. It's recommended to check the U.S. Embassy's website for the most accurate and detailed procedures.

I did it in Bangkok.

Very easy, took about 2-3 weeks.

I opted for drop off in person AND pickup in person (they notified me when it was ready).

All the info on the website points to doing it by mail but I didn't want to take any chances with delivery.
