What’s the difference with the ED visa for Muay Thai and the DTV for Muay Thai ? Since the stays are longer and over 5 years are gyms less strict with class attendance ?

If I am not asking this question correctly please forgive me.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The ED visa is linked to educational pursuits and requires mandatory attendance and class accountability, while the DTV visa is meant for leisure activities, providing more flexibility with no strict attendance requirements. The DTV visa generally allows for easier re-entry and is more cost-effective. In the Muay Thai scene, many prefer the DTV to avoid the upfront commitment and limitations of the ED visa associated with gyms. Some individuals still use the ED visa with language courses for added flexibility. Overall, the DTV has largely replaced the ED visa for many expats training in Muay Thai.

ED is a non-immigrant visa, DTV is not. You can open a bank account with ED by yourself. With DTV 99% of bank will refuse (without agent). Same for ID card.

Can apply DTV with the approval of Thai language class registration?

The simple difference is an ED visa requires you to attend and is supposed to be accountable as EDUCATION.

An ED visa in your passport can cause issues in the long run.

The DTV visa is for leisure activities.

You express your intention to be a tourist and attend Muay Thai training.

There is no requirement to do it more than once in 5 yrs and there is no obligation to go, like having a gym membership and never going.

There is no follow up or repercussions as long as you leave and reenter you'll get 6 months each time.

The question we are all waiting for the answer to is what will doing an extension in-country look like.

That will be answered soon.

In the Muay Thai scene it’s usually not recommended to get an ED visa through a MT gym.

You have to pay for a years classes upfront and gyms often change or are not as good as they appear to be on social media. You don’t want to end up stuck at a rubbish gym for a year.

What most people do is get a ED visa for Thai language school and take 2-3 classes per week, but still enjoy the freedom to go to which ever MT gym they want.

This was before the DTV. Now everyone is applying for the DTV instead of ED.. unless of course they don’t have the necessary funds.

So far its harder to exit and renter on Ed visa , you also need to pay for a re entry permit but may be denid entry if you can't speak thai with the officers. So if you are a frequent traveller the DTV is the much better option.....and the DTV works out cheaper (without tax)

The only area where Ed visa has an advantage is that yiu don't need 500k in the bank to apply

Everything else is s bad deal.

1 year over 5 years

Approx 60k a year over 30k for 5 years

Strictly monitored classes with no flexibility

Need a reentry permit and permission from school to travel

I think DTV has basically replaced Ed visa
