Remember December is the "High-high" season so you may want to book early in popular destinations. Places like the Gulf Islands were booked out last year. If this is a reconnaissance trip for where you want to move to next years I would be staying at least a week in places you are considering. If just a holiday enjoy yourself. On visits I have only ever used hotels and last 15 years or so booked through Agoda for personal visit.
