What is the best way to open a bank account in Bangkok as an expat, and how much should I expect to pay an agent?

Can anyone provide the contact information for a reliable agent in Bangkok to open a bank account in my name? I’ve seen people comment earlier that it can be done for around 4-6k baht, but can’t find those comments now.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around finding a reliable agent in Bangkok to assist with opening a bank account. Originally, comments suggested costs of around 4,000 to 6,000 baht, which were reported to be for Pattaya. However, users suggested that in Bangkok, costs have risen significantly, potentially reaching 40,000 to 60,000 baht. There were also suggestions to consider doing it independently, using insurance to facilitate the process, with one user recommending purchasing insurance directly from Kasikorn bank.

If you can do it yourself and they want 5k for insurance then that sounds like a bargain compared to an agent. I bought the insurance at Kasikorn. It’s real insurance. A couple of months later I had an accident and Kasikorn paid the 5k promptly.

I think it’s completely fair to buy the insurance to get a bank account in my name. I just won’t pay an agent 16k for it. I rather give that money to someone in need than a greedy agent.

I live in Bangkok so why would I go elsewhere? I’m not a tourist, I lived here for 12 years already and my life is here and my wife to be and all her family too.

what visa extension have you been on for 12 years living here?

from2009-2012 I just paid a lawyer for 1 year visa or 6 months. From 2013-2021 I did it in various ways, but got harder and harder to do it every year. Now I just came back on a tourist visa after 4 years in my home country, and extend it, then leave the country to get new 60 days until my marriage is done and I can get marital visa. Probably be done by march or April.

Do you have enough cash in a foreign bank that is equal to bt800,000? If so just apply for a retirement visa at the Thai embassy/consulate by e-visa next time you are out of Thailand. With that 90 day visa you can open a bank account easily in Thailand, then you can very easily change it to a marriage visa extension in Thailand. If you have the money that is the easiest way, and much much cheaper.

I’m not 50 years old so retirement visa doesn’t apply to me.

But I do have the 400k for marital visa.

I could give you a way to open a bank account that has worked for a few I have helped, but I am not going to post it publicly, or it will get abused and stopped.

Well then you should have all the requirements to do it legally then so why use an agent ?

Go to Bangkok bank main office on Silom Road. I just opened up a second account there for credit card.

Seems more like 40-60K instead, nowadays haha.

4-6K is in Pattaya. A bkk agent will cost double that at least.

I got someone in Bkk that do it for 16k but it felt like I’m being robbed 😁

Rolf Jönsson For 5k you better of going to a bank and offering to pay for their insurance for account opening. Extremely tough to find 5K agent in Bkk. Have you contacted Siam Legal ? i know they were offering just under 6K if you had long term visa with long term rental to open an account, early 2023 though. Take a daytrip to Pattaya and get it for 4k..ish..in one day

I would like to avoid getting the bank account in Pattaya because of the service charges for every transfer or withdrawal since I live in Bkk.

I rather pay the insurance for 5k if that gets me the bank account in Bkk?

@Rolf ********
well, I now have cleared your question. The process is the following: after you opened a Bangkok Bank or SCB bank account in Pattaya, put money in it. Then visit a Bangkok Bank or SCB branch near your location, and ask them to "transfer the account". They will open an new account for you in their branch, new account number and all, and transfer all your money (down to depletion) from your Pattaya account to your new Bangkok account. After this, they will shut down the Pattaya account. you will only have to pay a one-time fee for the new Debit Card and probably a fee for the service itself, shouldn't be more than 200 Baht
Kool *******
@Greg **********
that is not true. You can not just transfer accounts from one branch to the next anymore.
Greg ***********
@Kool ******
of course you can. With an existing account you can open a new one in another branch, transfer all money into in and have the old account closed. This is the commonly used method on Thai banks

nope. The same branch in a different location treats you as a brand new customer, whether you have an existing account with them in a different city, or not. I have plenty of friends that got caught up in that fallacy...lolol

I don't drink, and I don't hang out in bars. Try again to discredit me...lolol. You have not done, or know anyone that has done that...lolol.
Greg ***********
@Kool ******
every Farang who lives in my Eesan town has done the same. Started out with a bank account in Pattaya or Bangkok and "moved" it to the Eesan town. You have no idea, you just pull out of your ignorant nose what seems best suited for your blushed ego

@Greg **********
you are talking old times. Since covid it has all changed. Quit living in the past...lolol.

@Kool ******
I just talked to an agent, who is opening bank accounts for foreigners in Pattaya every day by the dozens. The method I suggested is the standard method when someone moves away from Pattaya to another location. You should be willing to LEARN every other day, you 🤡
Greg ***********
@Kool ******
Your "friends" the barstool experts? With an existing account you can open a new one in another branch, transfer all money into in and have the old account closed. This is the commonly used method on Thai banks. I did it myself.

There is a way round those charges i understand, someone posted recently how to do it via the app. You use a lot of cash in bkk? not pay via card ? The insurance is 5-8K depending on bank staff. You have to do the walk around unless someone names a particular person you can go to.

you should thank my girlfriend 😃, she accompanied me to the SCB branch in the Eesan when I "moved" my account from Hua Hin to this branch 😎, and she clearly remembered what they did on that branch

I didn’t do it for 16k I’m not an idiot 😂

So who will do it in Bkk for 5k on any visa?

Or do you mean that I go in myself and get a bank account if I buy their insurance for 5k?
Greg ***********
@Rolf ********
no, the agent in Pattaya gets 5K for their service and you don't need any forced insurance. In the old days you were able on some banks, to get an account opened if you bought their insurance, but since last year, rules have tightened and less and less banks are willing open an account for you if you are on a tourist visa or a visa-exempt entry. And sorry, I do not know an agent in Bangkok. Maybe google for it or use the search mask of the Facebook groups

you can get the account moved to the bank branch of your location. I opened my SCB account in Hua Hin, and now I use the services of the SCB branch in an Eesan town. I don't pay any extra fees

ok that sounds good. Scb is my bank of choice here. I had most banks but in gf name before. I now want in my own for marriage visa. Thanks for the advice 🙏

Sounds good if you can do it. [The limit of 50,000 Baht in international transfers is ONLY for people who use WISE to transfer the money and ONLY for people using a bank OTHER THAN Bangkok Bank, Siam Commercial Bank or Kasikorn Bank.]
