I just graduated and have a student visa expiring on the 20th October, but I am required to cancel my student visa before leaving the country. My question is, if I cancel my visa at the immigration office on the 16th, does it mean I have to leave within 24 hours, or before midnight of the 16th?

TLDR : Answer Summary
If you cancel your student visa at the immigration office on the 16th, you are required to leave the country by midnight of the same day. However, you can request an official letter from your school to confirm that your student status will remain valid until the 20th, allowing you to stay until 23:59 of the 20th. Additionally, for those graduating from a Thai university, options like applying for an ED Plus extension may also be available.
If you are on ED-plus extension, you are supposed to be able to apply for working (non-b, non-o working for organizations, or perhaps non-rs) without leaving kingdom. Why not talk with your local immigration office and your employer in future.
If you cancel your extension, you have to leave within the day as ED-plus cannot have future data to terminate the extension.

Are you graduating with a Degree from a university in Thailand ?
Or are you completing your course in a Thai language school ?
The answer is VERY important.
As you are eligible for a one year Ed Plus extension if you are graduating from a Thai university.

I graduated on 16 July 2025 actually. But when I did my "normal" visa extension, the officers gave me an ED Plus extension even before I officially graduated. As my university told the international students, apparently the ED Plus has 2 groups: 1 for students on their last semester of study prior graduation and group 2 for graduated students
and yours expires this month. With no added extensions available to you.
It might be possible for you to get a 7 day get out of Thailand extension... which if granted is an ORDER for you to LEAVE THAILAND Thailand within 7 days from the date you apply for the extension.
that's true. I just graduated from a university with a degree. I already got one ED PLUS extension (group 1, before I graduated). The University says I could've made another extension (ED Plus Group 2, for graduated students) but I am not keen on doing that. I would just cancel my visa, leave before the 20th, and come back in with a 30 day exemption (I'm from Malaysia), then apply for a Non-RS visa with the documents the university have given me (as I will be working as a researcher with the University).
We wish you continued success in association with the university. 🤗

I looked at your recent postings on this Thai Visa Advice forum...
You have ALREADY graduated from a Thai university with a MBA degree last year...AND obtained the ADDED one year Ed Plus extension... which expires on October 25th... this month.
Therefore you don't have any added extensions available to you.
You MUST leave Thailand on or before the ending date of your Ed Plus extension stamp in your passport......
Which is this October 20, 2025.

Another thing if you want to buy more time is to request and buy any extension which you won't be eligible for and you will get a 7-Day extension denied stamp giving you 7 days from the date of application to leave the country.
his newfangled visas can always cause a bit of a misunderstanding kerfuffle

Once visa is cancelled you will have to leave the country before midnight of the day in which you go cancel your visa BUT you can ask your school/university to issue an official letter to show at the immigration stating that your visa -precisely your student status with that institution- will cease its validity on 20th. This will give you 4 days time (supposing you’ll go to IO on 16th) until 23:59 of the 20th to leave the country. Mods can tell you better, but I went through the same thing and that’s what I did.
