What experiences have others had applying for a Digital Nomad Visa (DTV) in Thailand while transitioning to freelance work from the UK?

Hello everyone.

This has probably been asked a few times before, so apologies for any repetition (I did try to have a look through the group)!

My wife and I are going to be applying for the DTV from the UK soon.

We are both Product Managers and have full time jobs/contracts but we are leaving our current roles and are planning to go freelance with nothing lined up just yet.

Just as additional info: My current role (that I am leaving) is a full time contract. I work remotely but my contract does have my 'official' base as London. I am allowed to work remotely abroad for a certain amount of time a year.

For the portfolio - has anyone had experience just using an adapted CV? Has this proved an issue at all when applying for the visa?

Additionally - are we better off applying for the Visa as a couple or applying separately? Or does it make no difference?

Thanks!

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user inquires about applying for a Digital Nomad Visa (DTV) from the UK while transitioning to freelance work. They seek advice on using an adapted CV, applying as a couple versus individually, and the necessary documentation. Comments suggest providing a letter from the current employer, proof of remote work capability, and guidance on applying based on freelance history.

Without a history of freelance work where you can show your clients, possibly that you have paid tax, have registered with authorities as freelance etc workation is going to be difficult for you. I'd suggest that one of you applies using soft power and the spouse applies as a spouse once that is granted

People usually provide a letter from current employer stating they can work remotely along with their current employment contract A couple of guys I know from UK did this plus company documentation and tax return of the company.

We have history of work for previous employers but not technically as freelancers. But thank you Greg! :)

Anonymous participant I suppose it depends on the embassy what they accept as proof of a "Freelance" portfolio. No idea about the London Embassy if you are going that way but some of the regional embassies seem to be tightening up according to recent posts ie asking for company registration etc. Good luck anyway.

Thanks Greg. We're leaving the current contract and switching to freelance so the current contract won't apply when we make our application for the visa

Anonymous participant Why not apply before you leave your current employer? It might be much easier than proving you are freelance without and clients, etc. or history to show.

that is a good point and have definitely thought about that. Only thing is the contract with the current employer isn't actually 'remote' even though I do mostly work remotely

Anonymous participant sounds like it might be tricky then

Anonymous participant So you are applying as freelancers with no history of freelance work and a portfolio of your previous work for an employer? I have not read of a similar situation but some have applied with just a website and their product offerings. As you will have read different embassies have different requirements. Good luck anyway. The guys I personally know who did it from UK used their own UK Ltd company.
