Hi,

Do you know what documents are required to apply for a non immigrant o visa at the Thai Embassy in Laos? Based on marriage. I have a non B and work permit. My French husband needs to apply for this (I am British). We have a UK marriage certificate which has been legalised in the UK (attached apostille).

Any information much appreciated.

TLDR : Answer Summary
To apply for a Non-Immigrant O visa at the Thai Embassy in Laos based on marriage, your husband will need several important documents, including: a legalised marriage certificate (already apostilled), a letter from your employer stating he can obtain this visa, and other supporting documents such as your work permit and passport. It's advisable to take additional documentation to demonstrate your employment status, ensuring you have enough proof for the visa application. Confirming with the specific embassy for any local requirements is also recommended.

is your husband already in Thailand on a tourist visa? My non-Thai wife was able to change her tourist visa into an O visa at Immigration in Bangkok. We just needed confirmation documents from my employer and our legalised UK marriage certificate. Once she had this she was able to piggyback onto my Extension of Stay. She didn't have to leave Thailand.

Would the legalised marriage certificate be needed to do the 1 year extension in Thailand?

Lucy Leibold Yes, we got our UK marriage certificate legalised in Milton Keynes and then certified by the Thai Embassy in London. The whole process took around 2 weeks, and we did it all while we were in the UK. The Legalisation Office forwarded the certificate to the Thai Embassy in London for us, but unfortunately this is not much use to you now. I would follow Tod Daniels' advice. Good luck.

AFAIK; it is NOT required. I know people who get Non-O visas based on marriage to a thai from the consulates in Lao by just showing the brit marriage certificate and no legalization

Yes I missed stepped 2! Do you know if this is required in embassies outside of Thailand such as Laos, Vietnam or Cambodia? None of the site's seem to specify.

@Lucy ********
you're out of luck then. :/ you can't do it inside the country without getting it legalized and brits need to send things back to Milton Keynes to get it done.

Ok. So in response to Henry Durrant We were trying to do exactly as your wife did. However, today we went to get our marriage certificate legalised in Bangkok (I had it legalised in UK and posted back to me) only to be told it actually needs stamped also by the Thai Embassy in London BEFORE they will legalise it in Bangkok. (I didn't realise I need to also do this step). My husband now only has 30 days left on his passport as of Monday (extension of stay) and as Tod just said, he needs 15 days left to submit application. Meaning, he has 15 days to post it to Thai Embassy London and get it back and go back to Bangkok and get it stamped there too - I'm thinking 15 days isn't enough time now so going to Lao or somewhere else is the best option. Did you have to send your marriage certificate to Thai Embassy London too? Do you know how long it took for them to return it? And
@Tod ********
I assume it's not required in Lao to have the marriage certificate legalised? (Running out of time now to do this).
Tod *********
In Bangkok you need at least 15 days left on your current 30 day visa exempt, 60 day tourist visa OR the 30 day extension from those to get the conversion done. Because the application goes under consideration for 14 days before you go back and get the Non-O visa and the new 90 day stamp inked into your passport

Thank you for all of that information! Do you think my husband can go there by himself with all the appropriate documentation or would I need to go there with him?

Ok cool. One last question: do you think there will be any problems if the marriage certificate isn't legalized (running out of time to legalize it)...
Tod *********
he should be able to pull it off without you as long as he has signed copies of your passport, work permit and marriage certificate (take the original one too) and the rest of the documentation. If they ask why you aren't there, he can always say you're working ;)
Tod *********
take as much documentation as you can; your contract for work, the letter from your company saying it's okay to issue the 90 day Non-O to your husband, your work permit, your passport, your marriage certificate, etc. It's way better to have TOO much proof than not enough.

Good Luck (y) report back if you can and let us know how the process went for you

Great thank you.

you're definitely going to need a letter from your company stating that you are employed from xx to xx and that it's okay with the company to let your husband get a Non-O visa. have the company stamp it too

Does anyone have any personal experience or know the specific requirements for applying for a non immigrant o visa in Lao. I know you can get this visa here and I also know different Embassy's require different things. Does anyone know what documents Lao requires? Applying based on marriage to a UK national who has non B and work permit in Thailand.

Thank you for any specific information.

It's a non o visa. To accompany parent or spouse working here.

yes, and I believe some papers from employers are also required. Not sure about detail requirement in Lao...

don't think there is a visa for just being married to a foreigner living in Thailand. it might be Non-O visa based on dependent to you as a foreigner who is legally working in Thailand with Non-B...
Daniel ************
its non-o - based on dependent

It doesn't say that the marriage certificate must be legalised in Thailand. Do you think it's assumed that it should be?
