Good morning. I wonder if someone can give me a bit of advice. I’m a UK citizen divorced ,however I’m in a relationship with a Thai lady. She lives and works in the UK, which is where I met her four years ago .

I’m retired She still works and we both live together. she owns a house two hours drive north of Bangkok eventually she wants to go back to Thailand permanently with me to follow her. We have both discussed about getting married here in the UK, but I have now talked about getting married in Thailand.

The information I want is what kind of documentation do I require in order to get married in Thailand and where to obtain it if anyone out there that can offer me assistance and advice, I would be most grateful.

TLDR : Answer Summary
A UK citizen wishing to marry in Thailand will need several documents, including a valid passport and an affirmation of their unmarried status, which can be obtained from the British embassy. It's crucial to plan for registration of the marriage, which requires additional paperwork, such as a financial verification for immigration purposes. You will also need two witnesses for the marriage ceremony. Some recommend using a visa agent for assistance due to the complexities of Thai visa laws and documentation requirements. Alternatively, some say that getting married in the UK and then legalizing the certificate in Thailand can be simpler.

if your intentions are to move to and live in Thailand, or, at least spend more time in Thailand than in the UK, then it's just easier to get a Thai Marriage Certificate from Thailand (get married in Thailand) than having an UK Marriage Certificate (getting married in the UK) and getting any UK Marriage Certificate legalised at Milton Keynes, then at the Thai Embassy in London, then at the Department of Consular Affairs in Bangkok, perhaps even also at the British Embassy in Bangkok....

I was thinking of getting married in Thailand but there seemed to be alot of paperwork. Things needed to be translated and then the translations needed to be verified.

I hear what some are saying regarding a simpler ceremony, but I couldn't find it.

So in the end we got married in the UK. Then 5 weeks later we had a full blown Thai wedding, monks blessing, procession, all the Thai family distant relatives and friends. Food and drink.

We dressed in full Thai atire, changed in the afternoon to western dress then casual for the evening.

I had a great day and my wife had the wedding she wanted.

Then the following day I planted the ceremonial banana plant and sugar cane. Followd by a week on the beach in Koh Kood.

To get married in Thailand you will need a certificate of freedom to marry from the British Embassy, then that certificate has to be certified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. With that done you make an appointment at the amphur to register the marriage. You will need 2 witnesses to register the marriage. As you are both in UK I would say it is easier to just go and marry at a registry office in UK then have the certificate notorized by the Thai Embassy in London.

you have to get the marriage certificate notarized by the UK government and then both documents translated. You then have to pay the Thai embassy to confirm the translations are accurate

I got married 14 years ago went to local registrar in UK got blue paper to confirm availability to get married outside of UK go to local registrar in Thailand book wedding simple ceremony they ask do you answer yes ya married if you want live in Thailand you will need about £8000 a year in a bank account can use an agent to do the marriage thing for you to stay in Thailand if you want the Buddhist wedding it's likely gonna cost have to pay a dowry and gold depending if your lady wants go down that route if does then you gonna have a party some crazy wedding ceremony I found it a bit weird especially the pigs heads for the ceremony but it's their way of doing things

I would definitely recommend you go to a visa agent who will give you the best up to date advice. You will always get many many answers to your one question on this site, although very helpful and many answers can be correct, you will end up totally confused and it will not be in your best interest. I have just completed my retirement visa, bike & car driving licence with an agent. The major benefit of using an agent is that they will have all your documentation on file and any mistakes with paperwork will be their priority of correcting. The Thai visa laws are changing all the time. I've used One Stop Services in Pattaya (DETAILS BELOW) His name is Mark and he runs the agency with his wife. Pom. He will answer any questions you have by WhatsApp within 24 hrs. Brilliant service!
